Vronsky...nice... the quote in the blurb in the first link sums it up...

"Here is the song by which my father compared all other songs! "It's a nice song", he would say, "but it's not "Star Dust!""

I was glad to see the Willie Nelson version, Willie did a nice job with this song...

My dad bought me the Hoagy Carmichael version of Star Dust for my 40th birthday.

"It's about time you listened to some grown up music." he said.

I listen to it just about every day.

Thanks vronsky.

Thanks! I hadn't heard of this site before.

Hee hee! Groovy post! When Hoagy met Ziggy! That's some party, man, with Louis and Nat and Frankie...

And Hoagy, whatta guy. There's just something about his persona, his style, gotta love him.

"Despite Hoagy's folksiness, humor and accessibility, there was also something emotionally deep and complex in him..."

Vronsky and Y2Karl should get together and go bowling sometime.

Oh, and crapmatic, very eponysterical comment, there.

Willie's version is great. Stardust (the album) is terrific and worth a listen if you haven't heard it. Willie has always had a poet's heart and he handles the standards with much style.

Willie has always had a poet's heart

Hey, not only a poet's heart but a poet's pen as well! Let's not forget, this was the guy who wrote Crazy, which is a really classy and stylish standard of its own.

A classic song, Vronsky. Thanks so much.

I first heard this song on the NPR Top 100 American Songs series. I still remember where I was when I heard it. Wonderful.

And you didn't tag it "Star Dust" or songbook or music, or or or...?

Willies version is great. I remember hearing it in a hi-fi store which used it as their demonstration cd. Listening to 'stardust" on the the big maggies gave me chills.

Hoagy is the king though. I first heard him years ago on some old smithsonian discs and came across this song and just played it over and over.

Here he is playing piano for Bogie and Bacall in To Have and Have Not.

Hoagy's haint informs the music of his (and my) hometown. I have a drawing of the building which housed the act of composition of this song up on my living room wall. The Gables is directly across the street from the oldest part of the Indiana University campus, and at the time the song was composed, 1927, would have been lightly wooded with second growth permitted to grow beginning around 1900.

I have always imagined an early evening walk through that section of campus informed and inspired the melody - there's something of the wind in those trees in that opening cascade of notes.

Hoagy was great as the piano player in "To Have and Have Not" with Bogey and Bacall.

You made my evening, vronsky. I owe you.

Hoagy was great as the piano player in "To Have and Have Not" with Bogey and Bacall.

And as Uncle Butch the bar owner in Best Years of Our Lives.

The scene where he plays the piano with Homer (played by real life disabled actor Harold Russell), who lost his hands in the war. That scene always... sorry... I got something in my eye...

ahem... anyway... great movie.

Here's what you do when you're not sure what the link is, if you opt to go a different path than "don't bother clicking it."

1. Click the link.
2. See that it's a youtube video.

Sweet! Ok, so now we know what the OP linked to; a youtube video. Now, there's no description of what the youtube video is, so once again we can opt to not bother clicking it or:

1. Click play.
2. Watch the video.

OH MAN I GET IT NOW.

that nat king cole version gives me chills every time i hear it. man o man, that man was golden.

i live in bloomington, IN -- hoagy's hometown and place of burial. his gravesite -- not too far from alfred kinsey's -- is often festooned with various memoribilia. and pennies.

it's really lovely to live in a town that's steeped in hoagy lore. what an amazing songwriter, storyteller, poet.

i'm also a huge fan of the stuff hoagy did with johnny mercer, like skylark (this version by maxine sullivan)

Can I be the only who was hoping for (and even expecting) David Essex? I suppose so ...

1. Click play.
2. Watch the video.

OH MAN I GET IT NOW.

Yeah, I had to click on 8 videos to learn that David Essex was in none of them. (What ever happened to the href title attribute?)

Two David Bowie live vids of the same fucking song and no link to the movie Stardust? Really?

Bonus: Essex and Cat.

I remember hearing it in a hi-fi store which used it as their demonstration cd.

There are some very, very badly mastered versions of the album Stardust around. The gold columbia master sound version is extraordinary though. It might be hard to find a hard copy, but lossless downloads are out there.

Ya, I'm not sure what those are doing there either..

How about the Jeff Healey version, beginning at 26:20 here.

whoa, *spoiler alert, loved the last 3 links with the Stardust implosion and Ziggy Stardust. Man, that David Bowie is a cool dude.

Every time I see a post with doublespaced letters with each one a link unto itself - I find myself consumed with ennui, covered by a rich, thick coating of boredom, wrapped in a blanket of laziness. sorry.

Damn! Now I'm hungry! Thanks so much!

huh, following the old links to what I said about Hoagy back when makes me think I have an essay in my on the guy, since I seem to retain some of the same ideas about his music. huh. Thanks for kicking that loose.

Count me as another who would like less mystery and a little more context in the construction of posts. I sneak into Metafilter at work and scan the posts very quickly to see if there's anything I fancy. Loading up You Tube to discover I'm really not that interested is quite annoying. Sounds petty but it's just a usability thing. Thanks for listening.

This is all too strange... I had that song in my head when I woke up yesterday, but couldn't figure out why. Now I know.

And yes, I really love the Nat Cole version, but am sad to think that part of his smoky sound was from smoking cigarettes, which probably contributed to his lung cancer.

I believe Hoagy penned the longest song title in the English language: I'm a Cranky Old Yank in a Clanky Old Tank on the Streets of Yokohama with my Honolulu Momma Singing Those Beat-o, Beat-o, Flat-on-my-Seat-O, Hirohito Blues.

Whew!
