Joseph Weizenbaum has left our collective insane asylum.

After long illness he passed away in Berlin on March 5th. (couldn't find anything in english as of yet)
He was very tired of always being asked about ELIZA and AI and would rather be remembered for his later work instead.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Sad to hear Mr. ELIZA has passed, but a wikipedia link and an article that the vast majority of readers won't be able to actually read is really pretty thin. If someone can put together a better post for Weizenbaum's death (and life), cool, but this should probably go. -- cortex

For some reason, I always thought ELIZA was Minsky's.

A wikipedia link and a obit article in German. Seriously?

(couldn't find anything in english as of yet)

So you just decided to make a crappy post, because metafilter is about speed, not quality.

I'm sorry, I agree with signal here. This obit post could have been really interesting with some links to... well, pretty much anything.

Also, .

I thought i had seen quite a few obit posts around here that consisted of nothing but one link to a news item and the main purpose of such post were to be a . dump or place for snarky jokes about the deceased anyway. Should have done more research and taken some more time to do it justice i guess. Feel free to delete and do a nicer one.

Eliza's built into Mac OS X. Launch Terminal, type emacs, hit return, hit shift-ESC, type xdoctor, hit return.
