It manages to combine the intimdation of a serious bike shop (where I'm going to look like an idiot for not knowing what a derailleur is) with the intimidation of a hipster coffee shop (where I'm going to look like an idiot for not knowing the difference between the five kinds of green tea).

I like coffee (yes even fancy coffee) and I like bicycles (yes even fancy bicycles) , but I cannot help but think every time I see places like this that most of the patrons are just playing roles.

Im reminded of the aritcle in The Onion a few years back about the dude at the Starbucks reading some "important" book (cant remember the name) in a very conspicuous manner so as to make the cover of the book as visible to other patrons as possible.

In my hometown, the gearheads' favorite bike shop (Devil's Gear) is just down the block from Fuel, the coffee shop where all the cyclists hang out. Fuel has become the meeting place for some of the local group rides, and they've even done a show of bike-themed art. Come to think of it, though, Lulu's Cafe (a couple miles across town) is where a different set of group rides meet... There's competition for all the people in spandex.

That first article is pretty clearly a blatant piece of lifestyle marketing. Please don't assist marketeers in co-opting bike culture to sell more coffee. 'k, thanks. People can make their own adult decisions with regards to their mutually exclusive taste for coffee and/or cycling.

Besides, correlation does not equal causation. Almost everyone in America is addicted to caffeine and bicyclists are not immune. News flash, I'm sure.

A couple of Fridays ago, just for fun, I took a picture of all the bikes parked outside my local hipster coffee shop. Googling revealed that there were more than $80,000 worth of bike frames there, mostly fixies. And most of the messenger bags inside looked new. It makes a lot of business sense to cater to these people.

Why has no mini-mart robbing criminal come up with the idea of an hydraulic bolt cutter and a pickup truck?

Roswell Bicycles (in the eponymously suburb of Atlanta) has been doing this for at least 10 years with an attached cafe called Sprocket's. While it's suburban locale detrats from the hipster shiny-ness, it did have great weekend punk shows when I worked there back in high school.

I'm surprised I'll be the first to say it.

I've struggled with the issue of trying to drink coffee and bike simultaneously every day for the last year. I commute to work, and I don't often get up early enough to make coffee and drink it before I leave. There are virtually no coffee shops in the neighborhood I work in, so getting it once I'm at work isn't really an option, either.

Eventually I settled on getting a good thermos and getting up early enough in the morning to make coffee and then bring it with me. But if I had known sooner about that mechanism for having a coffee holder on my bike? I would have scooped that up in a second.

The first article might be Pepsi Blue, but there's a niche market. And I think I'm part of it.
