Thanks mathowie and ericb, I knew about mapmyrun.com, I'll have to check them out.

What I really want, is something like Topo, the old map program from the late 90s. It gave you nice, clean, zoomable topo maps where you could get elevation profiles and print out maps and such. Google maps has topo maps, but (in cities at least), they are incredibly busy and difficult to read.

anyone know of anything like that?

MapMyTri? Never would I have dreamed of such riches. Goodbye, GMaps Pedometer.

This is incredible. One place to plan and store bike and run workouts. You can search workouts that other users have created for your area, and you can tell it a mileage and it'll try to find a new one. Awesome, awesome.

Bikely is new to me. Thanks. These are all useful.

I wish, however, that they incorporated vertical. In my neighborhood, that's a lot of what makes a ride/run doable or not. "Klimb" has always been my goto app, but these online solutions have more user contributions.

@lothar, when you pull up the map in MapMyRun, there's a checkbox on the left for "display elevation" which provides that info at the bottom of the map.

that's also what makes it most useful for me, as a a 28 mile ride (I use mapmyride) with 100' of elevation increase is much different than the 28 mile ride that had 1300' of increase I went on last weekend. :)

Thinking further, though, isn't having four (MapMy: Ride, Walk, Hike, Tri) a little redundant? I mean, they're using the same app for each site, so why not have it one big MapMy community? It just seems overkill to me.

Nifty. A few more bells and whistles than GMap Pedometer, which I've been using for over a year to map my runs. Nice feature of GMap Pedometer is that you can save each route as a unique URL, which you can then paste into a Google spreadsheet running diary. More homebrew, but it works for me.

I found the point-and-click input thing a bit frustrating - wanted to see an "undo last point" button when I made a mistake but did not see an option for this.

I did however see the "Import from Garmin GPS" link, and that is cool. Hooray for technology!

There is an undo button, and there's a cool feature to have it automatically follow roads, which I find nice running in the city - though if you run against traffic on a one way, it gets all confused.
