Arthur C. Clarke has died. And his wikipedia entry already lists his death. Can we get a third by midnight, so we don't have to play the "Hey, who will the third be?" game all week?

First Gygax, now Clarke? My escapist fantasy life is falling to pieces. But wait! I still have MeFi.

Out of all the wonderful things that could be said about Arthur C. Clarke, this is the obit post we get? The man was a true visionary and a wonderful humanitarian. You want to just try to find another dead person by midnight?

This post sucks.

My condolences to Clarke's family and here's a drink to the legions of SciFi fans, hell just lovers of books, that will mourn him tonight and in the days to come.

There's a little tiff at work whether or not he originated the idea of geosynchronous comms satellites or popularized it. Supposedly, he published a paper in Wireless World in 1945 with the idea. 1945. Jeez. The first satellite that went into space was a little more than a decade later. Science fiction writers are amazing.

Unpleasant & shitty post to commemorate his death on Mefi... I was just writing one about this when I saw the preview, so much for spending time to add links. I loved so many of his stories growing up.

Clarke and Kubrick were the architects of my dreams when I was kid. I saw 2001 in the theater when I was 8. I didn't understand it but I loved it.

I'm not making light of the man's passing; the joke is aimed at that dumb "three famous deaths" tradition, not at the loss of ACC. Poorly worded, I guess, but then I forgot that no humor is allowed on obit threads.

I.) Any sufficiently advanced writing is indistinguishable from magic. Thanks for blurring the line, Arthur.

II.) This post is not sufficiently advanced.

Yes, but this about the loss of ACC.

The only famous person I've ever had an unsolicited personal email from... commentating on something I had written about him, so I'll fondly remember him just for that, never mind all the fiction.

He led a long and happy and unusual and idiosyncratic and influential life: in other words, unlike many authors and celebs, he was sui generis. R.I.P.
