What do we call the period of cleaning that we carry out in the spring? That's right, Discardia! This five-year-old holiday started yesterday and lasts till April 5th. Via Lifehacker, who open the festivities with 10 ways to declutter your digital life.

I have a Libertarian neighbor who was planning to invade and occupy a local landfill and declare it the Independent Republic of Discardia. I guess he's gonna have to find another name. Refusia? Trashistan?

Maybe it's when you throw out the uneaten hot dog buns?

I'm about to discard Lifehacker from my RSS viewer. It seems every post now is a flashback to a year ago, some really obvious organizational tip, some so-anal-as-to-be-silly tip that takes more work than it saves, or a recap of AskMe.

IIRC the editors get paid by the post and have daily minimums to meet, so it's no surprise that they constantly and cheerfully recycle their own old material and repost content from any number of other blogs at a furious pace.

I, too, was going to dump them for good, but I discovered you can filter the RSS by tag. Currently I'm subscribed to this:

Yeah, I need to get around to filtering my Lifehacker feed as well. They used to post fun and useful programs on a daily basis, but it's been getting more and more useless and self-help-ish over time. I'll never dump them entirely, though. Their Ask Mefi Round-up was how I came across this site!

Needs repeating. Should be tattooed on Cory Doctorow's head.

Yeah, like we need him to look at himself in the mirror more often than he does now.

Anyhow. Digital decluttering? What's the point? Every year I spent $100 on a new hard drive that's four times the size of my smallest hard drive, and I replace it. I just gave away a box of 60 VHS movies because there was no point in owning them anymore: I threw away my shitty old VCR a few years back and I can store pretty much every movie I'd ever want to see in a nearly negligible amount of physical space, digitally. Why would I want to declutter my data? I want to increase the amount of data I have and declutter my physical life.

No dude, it's not for him -- it's the most eloquent possible defense of him, for anyone looking at him.
