Best weather report ever. I was perplexed at first, but finding myself watching it five times in succession and grinning more broadly each time revealed that there's something about the simplicity of the report and the way Arthur responds to the jacket comment. That and the way they just kind of dismiss the whole thing when they move on like it never happened. Totally normal for most programs of this sort, but stands out because of the exchange. IOW: Plate. Beans. Laugh.

Here's my take on it: Before the day's filming, the news crew is approached by one of the producers. "Okay everyone, we got a new sponsor. It's the tailor downtown. So from now on I want you guys to wear these jackets on the air." All of them respond, "All right, boss." Satisfied, the producer leaves. They then spend the next fifteen minutes ridiculing the heck out of these jackets. They don't match what they're wearing, they're too hot, they're itchy, etc. Flash forward to the moment in the video-- When the newscaster makes the joke about not needing a jacket, it at first seems like pretty normal banter to Arthur. But after a moment, it clicks. She just gave the finger to bureaucratic pudding heads like their producer. On the air no less. Hence the crack-up. Just my impression of it. YMMV.

You guys are missing the actual subtext, here. The news lady is never funny. Not ever. Every time she attempts to be cutesy on camera it totally bombs. She's terrified of losing her job and she worries that she's just not a funny person. The other day, she broke down in tears... on camera... when her now legendary attempt at a joke ("but wait'll you see THESE corns!") fell dead the moment she uttered it. Rumor has it that babies born at that very moment were born incapable of laughter. Off camera, she was visibly upset at all times after the incident, and Arthur was the one who assuaged her grief, telling her that she's really not that bad and that she just gets too nervous on camera to deliver the jokes well. He told her that so long as she believed in herself and let those jokes rip like they were made out of solid gold awesomeness, she'd be fine. If she acted like it was funny, the world would laugh with her. It seemed to brighten her mood a bit, and she promised she'd try to be a little more confident from then on. The next day witnessed the video in question. The news lady, too terrified of her own failure to speak with authority and confidence, weakly blurted out her line about not needing her jacket. No one said anything for a good second or so. Arthur watched as her eyes welled up, the tears about to burst forth. One thought passed through Arthur's mind: Holy fuck, she's going to blow her brains out. Desperately, with whatever was left of his strength after witnessing that terrible joke, Arthur let out a maniacal guffaw, a madman's broken laugh as full of wild pleading as the news lady's eyes were of tears. It was fake, it was terrible. She could tell. But somehow it made things a little easier for her. She was comforted by his need to comfort her. She could make it through the show, and that hard little pistol in her purse could stay where it was for a little longer. No caps, as it were, needed popping just then. With relief, she looked at Arthur across the studio. "Thanks Arthur," she said.

The weatherman is definitely stoned. Not just because of the way he laughs; because of the way he says "pretty much everywhere, it's gonna be hot". And the guy on the right starts laughing sympathetically at how stoned the weatherman is. And yeah, wearing identical blazers is obviously a topic of discussion among these three. This has become clear to me upon repeated viewing. It's after the third or fourth viewing that the funny kicks in.

I can't stop looping it. Different parts get funnier -- at first I was laughing at how awesome that laugh was, then at the bizarre pause before the laugh, then the chirpy jacket comment, and now I'm onto thinking "Thanks, Arthur" is hilarious. In an hour, "it's gooonna be hot" is going to be sidesplitting. This is kind of like looking at a brick up close and pretending it's a sculpture -- with the right frame of mind, everything can be funny (except things that deliberately try to be funny, and fail).

"Boom goes the dynamite" is very hard to watch. Gods, I feel so sorry for that guy. Why did they have him in front of the camera? I keep thinking he's going to cry. Agh. So uncomfortable! He only comes alive when doing play-by-play, and even that was halting and awkward. The desk anchors at the end both sound like they're rescuing him from some punishment. Between this and the two farting ones, I'm dubious about clicking any other others proffered... But I'm going to do it anyway: Super Smash Brothers: Brawl characters dancing to a Swedish song called "Caramelldansen." - I guess I need to click through the rest of the "Caramelldansen" vids before I decide about this one. So far, no giggling. giggly German weather lady - also no giggling. Maybe I've overtapped the gigglebox?!? laughing babies - makes me laugh until I get sad. The last clip in the set is from AF(h)V and they actually won the grand prize based on that crazy laughing. The baby in the second clip is the one that captured my heart, though. The whole falling over thing just slays me. Wine Stomping Incident - not funny, but wasn't billed as such, so what the heck was I expecting? That "too visceral" comment should have warned me. "Caramelldansen" series - only the live action was interesting to me, but not funny, per se. Am starting to wonder if there's something fundamentally wrong with me. Dramatic Tarsier (aka "THX for your monitor") - cute, but not funny or really sublime. Could be because I've seen too many of these critters and so the eye opening thing isn't funny? Should I get myself checked out at some humour clinic somewhere? The most fully joyful video on the web. (aka Yuki-Joy) - I see what you did there. I want my 4.5min back :( also, I defy anyone to keep from smiling watching this (aka Nintendo Boy) - Not when it was on AF(h)V, and not since. There's a better, earlier "OMG I GOT WHAT I WANTED!" vid that has a kid basically break down sobbing because they can't believe their good fortune. Yeah, this video made me LOL after a few viewings, whereas most of the others made me chuckle grimly and not want to see them again. I think the first clip seems somehow innocently funny, without a hint of schaddenfreude. Or rather, part of what makes it funny is that, due to the clip's brevity, we don't know who we should be laughing at. Thus the moment or situation itself becomes "existentially" funny. However, there can be no ultimately existential humor -- ultimately, there has to be a *what* that we're laughing *at* . . . but our inability to find a focal point for our laughter just creates more tension which, because we're already laughing, is immediately resolved in more laughter. I think this sort of existential/surreal/absurd dislocation is part of what makes some of those Tim and Eric shorts so inexplicably funny.

Here's how I read it. I'm assuming the following: The weather guy is probably still a little stoned. Those bad jackets are likely a running joke in the studio. No one EVER needs a jacket where they live. The weather report is always the same, day after day, Arthur intoning those same words, "Pretty much ever-where, is gonna be hot." Now, one day the stoned weather guy has just about had it up to here with the ugly jackets, so he hatches a plan to make them look even more ridiculous. He gets all the on air people to agree to try to work in a reference to the jacket in each newscast. The way it works is you get points based on how much news has gone by at the time that you make your jacket joke. But if you wait too long, someone else gets to it first. There can only be one score per newscast. The theory being that as the program progresses, the tension mounts, and the jacket-reference brinksmanship starts to build up to unbearable levels. The lady newscaster thinks this is stupid. So she makes a point to say every day after the early weather, "Then I don't need a jacket." In this way, she ends the game early in each program, so that they can all get down to the serious business of reading the news. It backfires, though, because since the weather guy is a stoner, he thinks this is hilarious.
