Don't forget Lurch. He's got horns that are 7 feet 6 inches across and 38 inch circumference. I know he's a Watusi and not a long horn, but still... posted by onhazier at 8:38 AM on March 27

I was so sure that first picture of Lurch was a really bad photoshop job (obviously the proportion was all out of wack) and then I saw the second link with more pictures.
Great post -- beautiful steers... or whatever. Longhorns. Beasties. posted by Pantengliopoli at 10:36 AM on March 27
I like big horns and I cannot lie
You other ranchers can't deny
When a bull trots by with an easygoing pace
And a longhorn in your face

That's not quite what I mean when I tell my wife I've got the big horns on.
Hah, every time I see these kind of cattle, I wonder how well they can judge their own horizontal clearance. Like, would they clothesline themselves running through a too-narrow gate? Or would they do like what my dog did the time he tried to run through the doggie dog while carrying a baguette he stole off the kitchen counter: ...bonk!...bonk!....sideways turn, success! posted by jamaro at 10:51 AM on March 27
Here's a splendid pair. I don't like cattle much, and that's based on a lot of experience with them, but I do sort of like placid, older bulls, the big stocky beef breeds. The kind like in the "No, let's walk down to the bottom of the hill and..." joke. Like great big bulky statues poised in the field, only occasionally moved from one place to another or pointed in a different direction for the sake of artistic variety. posted by Wolfdog at 10:57 AM on March 27

Me too! I'm so baffled by this. Do they get stuck in trees? Do the horns have any... nerves or anything inside them so the animals can tell when they're scraping up on something?

Well now I can't decide whether to name my next pet "Bo Jangles Chex" or "Kodiak Frostfree." posted by the littlest brussels sprout at 1:55 PM on March 27
