"One million signatures to end Uwe Boll's directing career - Joystiq"
"One Million Gamers Would Stop Uwe Boll from Ruining Games - Online ..."
"Finish Uwe Boll Off - One Million Signatures Required ..."

Here's something I never understood - why is it's Uwe Boll's fault? I remember, vaguely, seeing one of his work while channel surfing, it sucked, so I turned it off. I would imagine if enough people don't like his stuff, they should just stop watching it and let the free market decided his career. If it's bad, don't watch it. Signing a petition to tell a man to quit his (probably) passion in life is just mean.

It seems to me this is more about how gamers are worried that Uwe Boll's films are seen as representatives of what we find entertaining. If this is the case, I say we should advocate game studios from selling their IPs to low-ball bidders.

Say what you will about him, but the director's commentary on the Alone in the Dark DVD is pretty damn funny. And the movie is really, unbelievably, ridiculously awful.

I think he should continue making films, just in case he makes an unintentional comedy classic. He's bad enough, and earnest enough, to do it.

Right, this doesn't matter much anymore now that Germany has closed that tax loophole, because presumably Uwe Boll won't be making any more movies due to lack of financing.

This petition, being his idea, sounds like a sneaky way of being remembered as a revolutionary filmmaker who drove millions of people into fits of passion over his work.

Are you sure of this? His wikipedia entry suggests otherwise, though the most recent development it cites is a January 2006 law:
It is not known if this will have any effect on Boll's funding as the new laws only seek to punish investors who are abusing the law for tax purposes; Boll's activities appear to be well within the legitimate usage of the tax shelter.

"Uwe Boll has said if this online petition gets a million signatures he'll stop making movies."

Mr Boll, sir, for your generous offer to be true, one must first accept you ever made movies in the first place. What you meant to say was if you get one million signatures, you will stop making pure, unmitigated screen-excrement.

But I say your offer is disingenuous! Yes! For you seem to believe that one million people exist who have even heard of you. This is, as I am sure you are aware, a preposterous notion at best. That one million people exist that know of you, let alone care enough about what you do to go so far as to sign an online petition demanding you stop doing what you obviously have minimal interest and ability in doing. Your box office receipts prove that the insane notion that one million people who have heard the name Uwe Boll is a beast that does not exist. And you know this to be true, so shame sir! Shame that you would dangle such a carrot with the full knowledge that it could never be tasted.

So go back to your hole, dear sir, and prepare the script for PacMan or The Island of Dr Moriarty or whatever screen-to-shit 'gem' you were currently working on half-assedly. I shall not go see it, but rest assured that someone, somewhere will be blogging a negative review of it already.

Ewe Boll makes some horrendous movies, but this is a total low-rent Andy Kaufman move. This smacks as an attempt to be ironic or clever. I really like b-movies and some out-and-out crap for the MSK3K value, but Ewe Boll's films are hard to watch. People like Roger Corman, Inoshiro Honda and Ed Wood all had something that Boll lacks, that makes their movies enjoyable and campy, not painful to get through. I wouldn't miss him if he stopped, but I can't work up enough energy to care.

I read an interview recently with Ben Kingsley where they asked him, essentially: "Bloodrayne, WTF?" His answer was, essentially: "Always wanted to play a vampire. Bad call."

Thing is, if you watch the movie, you know the answer already from his performance. Kingsley doesn't phone it in, he wires it via telegraph to an outpost on the frontier, from where it is carried via Pony Express to the arctic circle, and then handed off to some guy named Doug who may or may not deliver it, depending on how much hash he's had that day. You can see it mostly in the eyes: "I signed on for this?"

They're so far beyond B-movie camp its like a new cinematic art form. It takes real dedication to produce such dreadful stuff. I dont go out of my way to see Uwe Boll films, mind you. But even Bloodrayne was a little better than most of the "original" films that the Sci-Fi channel foists upon the viewing public every weekend.

For the few of those out there who don't understand the Uwe Boll hate, it's not that he is a bad director, because that is forgivable. Even a bad director can have moments of cleverness that transcend the B genre. (See, Ed Wood, and Brain Dead era Peter Jackson)

No, the problem with Boll is that he is the destroyer of franchises. There will, most likely, never be a good Bloodrayne movie now, because people will only ever remember the terrible film that he made of that name. Based on historical precedent, Far Cry will also suck, and that will put a nail in that game's coffin as well.

The thing is, these may not have been brilliant storytelling in their original game form, but the characters were kind of neat, and the settings were compelling, and it was not inconceivable that a talented writer and director could turn these worlds into something wonderful. (the first Resident Evil movie is a good example of how this is possible).

Boll removes these from the playing field, because no one is willing to take a chance on a 'cool vampire chick who kills Nazis, and has snap out blades and a harpoon' because the next question will invariably be "Wait, didn't we already try that? It flopped huge!"

Boll did that. The quicker he is gone, the better.

Seriously, games are great, but as stories and plotlines go, they are pretty darned mediocre, with only a handful of exceptions. It would seem your argument, Boll ensures the real directors have to come up with something original.

But I'm not really being serious, I'm not defending Bolls work, ever.
