Baby Loves Hip-Hop? Kids albums are designed to amuse wee tots at the expense of parental sanity, right? Maybe not. What if you asked one of rap's finest producers to form a supergroup of some of the brightest names in the genre, all to create an album to introduce little minds to the world of hip-hop? You'd end up with Dino 5, a dinosaur-themed collection of tracks featuring Scratch (from The Roots), Ladybug (from Digable Planets), Wordsworth (from eMC) and Chali 2na (of Jurassic 5), all under the direction of the one and only Prince Paul. Has to be better than the rap about toilet paper on the "Elmo's Potty Time" DVD my kid watches. Even by the standards of rap music, it's dreadful.

Considering how often kids will listen to an album, this will still crush a parent's sanity. The fact that it's well produced childiren's hip-hop does not save it; it's still kiddy music.

If you want well-produced and kid's, but not hip-hop, check out Here Come the ABCs by They Might Be Giants. (They have No and Here Come the 123s as well, but I'm less familiar with those.) The videos are great as well.

this is what i'm talking bout. Wordsworth is billy brontosaurus and his favorite color is green and his favorite number is 3. if i had a rapping dinosaur like that to listen to when i was a kid that would have been the bomb.

Kids albums are designed to amuse wee tots at the expense of parental sanity, right? Only when it's done badly (says this sometimes-children's-music-musician.) Having said that, I'm looking forward to playing this for my kids as soon as I get home tonight, because they've already heard every one of these artists at home since before they were born.

If you want well-produced and kid's, but not hip-hop, check out Here Come the ABCs by They Might Be Giants. I hate to say this, but I actually found that album to be mostly meh; I think their adult music is, by and large, much more entertaining for kids than their children's music (and based on their responses to both, my children agree.)

My dino-loving three-year-old quite likes this (though his main obsession now, with all CDs, is to dance around with the CD case and look at the track numbers, then announce which number each track is: "THIS IS SONG NUMBER FIVE!") There's an earlier CD in this series called "Baby Loves Jazz," featuring Sharon Jones and friends doing jazzy versions of things like "The Wheels on the Bus" and "Ten Little Monkeys." It's actually quite listenable -- because, as a parent, you DO hear your kids' favorite albums eleventy million times in a row. Better this than Barney.
