John Oliver is hilarious on The Bugle Podcast. But on the Daily Show? Meh. The token Brit jokes are getting old and the wooden scripts on the Daily Show just aren't funny. I think he's a lot funnier when ad-libbing.

Stewart mentions later that they changed the funny names for that list of British fallen after rehearsal to a whole new set of funny names, which is why he was unable to control himself. He was hearing it for the first time.

Oh my lord. Out of curiousity, I hunted down the full show on the Comedy Network site (I'm in Canada and couldn't watch the original link) and I have just now recovered from watching that. What everyone else said: it shouldn't have been so funny, really, but I think I just trigged an asthma attack from laughing so hard.

It's more than that, though... half the humor comes from seeing Jon Stewart lose his shit (and at least a third from seeing Oliver do the whole bit without even cracking a smile). It seems like those are the funniest moments, when they break character. It's what made The Banana skit with Colbert so memorable, along with the "Bloggers in the media" bit, another time where the correspondent switched things up on Stewart to throw him off (Colbert's alias was supposed to be something else, and he switched it last-minute). It's like they're always trying to get John's goat, and his breaking down is a sign they've struck comedy gold. It helps that their laughs are so infectious, too. (Fun fact about that first Colbert clip: watch the top of his head at the very end when he's all gravitas. It's clear that he's slowly rising on his tiptoes to try to maintain his composure. I suspect that Oliver was likewise biting his cheeks bloody in the soldier bit, or something similar...)

He did a great job with that. It sort of reminds me of Colbert's correspondent's dinner speech, accurate and biting satire. It exposes the hypocrisy which is Fox News, and makes you laugh too.

Yeah, it's impossible for me to pick a favorite among the young turk, but when backed into a corner, I line up behind Wilmore. The best addition to the cast in ages. Not only because they've been lilly white for, like, the last ten years, but because that guy is God. Damn. Brilliant. I really like the parts when he teams up for Oliver, to me, nothing is as roll off the couch funny as when he takes the role of pundit at the desk.
