Seeing as the Mountain Goats' lyrics are legendary, this approach to the video makes sense. Plus, it's a neat video. But... Mountain Goats video. I almost miss the creaky dime-store boombox.

Love the Mountain Goats so much a friend and I spent an evening listening to the new record and googling lyrics - "Prince Far-I! Sept. 15, 1983 is about the murder of Prince Far-I!" - but for some reason the first time I saw this video I was disappointed. Too cutesy, maybe. But damn, do I love the Mountain Goats.

That was the first thing I posted when I re-created my blog. A really good song with a really great video that makes you appreciate the art and creativity that went into it. I am a bit frightened of posting a one link music video FPP myself but, if anyone is interested, the video for "Big Bang" by Cursive (about a year old) gives me the same feeling. Once I figured out what was happening (about half way through) I couldn't stop smiling! And received many multiple plays from me, as did The Goats video.

But... Mountain Goats video. I almost miss the creaky dime-store boombox. Yeah, it seems almost sacrilege to have a video for the Mountain Goats considering Darnielle's awesome lo-fi past, but I am always giddy with excitement when one actually comes out. This Year was pretty excellent as well. Also, I have had this entire album on repeat since it came out. "Lovecraft in Brooklyn" is an instant classic.

Well, I can't be sure but my guess is that there was a "Big Bang" (loud sound) off camera that shocked those people into giving those great expressions. I tried to find some info on it (half-heartedly) and came up with nothing.

I loved this video even before I was familiar with the song, and now that the album's out, the song itself is one of my favorites (along with Lovecraft in Brooklyn, which is so killer). I wasn't as into Get Lonely as I have been his other albums, but the video for Woke Up New had a similarly cool concept. It was also a treat to see Zombie Darnielle in the video for Aesop Rock's Coffee (warning: campy gore, awesomeness).

mayfly wake: I found a while ago some pretty rad live banter (at the end of this) about filming the video for "This Year": "This is a song that, in July, I stood in a room surrounded by seventeen- and eighteen-year-olds singing oooover and over and over again as a camera tracked across the room and it was a hundred and thirty degrees in there, and I usually exaggerate a lot, but I don't actually think that's that much of an exaggeration. It was really hot, and the blood makeup they had on me began to run, and I felt so goth. I was sooo happy about it, I said 'oh boy, I got black hair for the first time since I was seventeen and blood running down my face. You know, those commercials say it doesn't get any better than this, but, really, when you've got black hair and you're surrounded by seventeen-year-old goth types and there's blood running down the side of your face, it doesn't get any better than that!'" The bassist is usually such a snappy dresser (at the live shows), that I feel bad for him that he's wearing a clingy white unitard for a lot of the video. He looks so chagrined at about 1:30 in the clip.

I've watched the Sax Rohmer video several times, of course, and watched the Coffee video quite a few times, as well, but this was the first I'd seen of that game show "How Much Would You Pay" video, and from there it was only a burst of clicking until I realized that the 4AD promotional site for Tallahassee existed, and was still up. And that, there, just gave my day complete and utter fruition.
