lupus, I think the point of it is this unfunny guy trying to poke fun at people he thinks (rightfully so) look dumb. It's just that... he's unfunny. I dunno. Watch the video. I've been keeping an eye on this site for a while, but it hasn't really impressed me. The best content has been links to in-depth articles from other sources. Except for this, with Bob Odenkirk. It's really very funny, play both YouTube videos at the same time and listen to Bob give commentary on a ridiculous Hillary Clinton rally sing a long.

At least with the DOs and DON'Ts you know they will be sort of nice half the time (which means you can play the difficult game of trying to guess which ones are which). This guy seems to have let his asshole side go wild.

we were sitting around talking about the war and at some moment in the conversation, while I stretched back in my chair, I happened to look up. And I was frozen by what I saw crawling about on the ceiling. The insect was about the size of my fist and it was sickly translucent white and nearly as flat as a piece of paper. I could only see the chitinous sections of it's body clearly when it moved... it was like an flat elliptical white scorpion clinging upside down. It's milky white eyes had a single red pin prick dot - a pupil of sorts - in the center of each. And these eyes were fixed right into my eyes. Then, as if angry it began to shake and vibrate. If flexed some rather large ominous claws open. Silently. I have never seen anything so hypnotically terrifying in my life. I afraid to look away. Surely somebody else saw this terrible thing? It was right there over our heads. I scooted my chair back so it would not be over my head, my neck began to cramp looking up like that. I was vaguely aware of the other people in room talking to me but I couldn't look at them, too afraid that if I took my eyes off this thing it would... do something. It slowly crawled over me again and shook menacingly tracking me as I scooted my chair around. Where it had moved from revealed a tiny dime sized hole in the ceiling. I wanted to scream. But I couldn't. From the hole dripped tiny white eggs. Like fat squirmy grains of rice they fell into my lap. That's when I woke up. Sweat pooling around the back of my neck I opened my eyes to see shapes darting around the dark ceiling of the bed room until they faded back into the diffuse static of the lost dream state. The dream was insane in it's shear confused meaningless horror. I try to forget it. But I cant. It makes me scared to look up. Still. More entertaining than this website.

The best way to understand Vice's Do's and Don'ts is that sometimes the Dos are Don'ts, and sometimes the Don'ts are Do's, and most of the time there's never any clear indication of this and the rest of the time they're just showcasing the Quebecois to the rest of the world. The most consistent features of the Do's and Don'ts are the putdowns that tend to outwit any run of the mill caption contest, and the ability to spot raw teenage hawtness. Regardless you're always better off not putting too much thought into it.

loquacious - the girl that told me about vice magazine told me that I was their target market exactly, and was amazed I hadn't heard of it. I, too think it is shit. I've come to suspect her comment was a vague insult I wasn't quite hip to.

I occasionally liked the "Dos and Don'ts" clips, and I think Vice occasionally spits out something worth paying attention to despite the theatrics about their mock/not-mock viewpoints/ironic non-viewpoints, but assigning some sort of scale to the random street pictures instead of a one-liner and a thumbs-up/thumbs-down kind of kills what it was going for. Not that I think Vice's new ventures will do much better, but it's always entertaining to watch a misanthropic venture crash when it gets some self-consciousness and tries to actually do something.

I like a lot of the fashions, even though I'm a T-shirt/jeans/minimalist guy most of the time. I liked the Fruits books too (stole them from my last job)--didn't know there was a zine. Thanks for the link, MS. (Though damn that interface is frustrating.) I'm very glad I've completely ignored this whole Vice/hipster(?) culture thing. I can't really even tell you what it is, but it seems a lot like making fun of people because of the way they look. I got past that sometime around kindergarten. I do understand antagonism toward "the other," but can't say it's a positive thing.

I'm with Mikeh about the old Dos and Don'ts, there were definitely some gems in there from time to time. Once Vice switched the format to having them every day instead of a few every issue, they became lackluster and largely humourless. With regard to hipsters, I think there's a largely unspoken understanding that part of what makes being a hipster fun is making fun of other people's style. It's like everyone makes a deal to dress up in funky outfits so that the community as a whole has guaranteed entertainment every time they go out. But since this is all unspoken, people who aren't hipsters are obvious targets because they're not in on the secret. Try it sometime, it's fun.
