Holy crap, that just makes me want to be able to see Cherenkov radiation up close and personal even more -- it's so amazingly eery and beautiful. The rest of these are awesome too. I completely agree with Alison about the artist imbuing inanimate objects with life.

NUCLEAR ENGINEER
That's not a reactor core, it's just a pool of water. The water's there both to help keep the containers cool and block the radiation -- something like 10 ft of water (can't remember off the top of my head and it's not my specialty) can actually block radiation to levels that are completely safe to humans.

"The blue glow is created by the Cherenkov Effect. which describes the electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle, giving off energy, moves faster than light through a transparent medium."

Let's try this, instead:
"The blue glow is created by the Cherenkov Effect, which describes the electromagnetic radiation emitted when a charged particle gives off energy by moving through a medium faster than the speed of light in that medium."

I still don't like the 'describes' in there, but I think it's a bit clearer now. You cannot travel faster than c but you can travel faster than c/n.

malthas- 16 feet of water. At least that's what's the minimum for a TRIGA reactor. Not sure about other open-pool reactors.

The Cherenkov radiation one is fantastic. I want that on my wall.

To me, the inbred white tiger was the most amazing photo. How many of those exist for every one of the "entertaining" tigers? How terribly sad.

I liked the photo of the cherenkov radiation, as well, and the room where all the confiscated food goes. Take that, you customs fools! You may have gotten that cankerous lime, but you didn't get my Irish bacon! Mwa ha ha haaaaaaaa!
