According to Jonez's Wikipedia page: "Jonze was born Adam Spiegel in Rockville, Maryland, and raised in Bethesda, Maryland. His father, Arthur Spiegel III, was a distant relation of the Spiegel catalog family and founded APM Management Consultants." Which correlates with what I recall, though I can't cite further sources. He might have come from money, but the catalog fortune doesn't figure into it (as far as I can tell).

Must be nice to be born rich. imdb specifically states that he is not involved in or an inheritor of any of the spiegel catalog money, and as others have already mentioned, he is only distantly related to the people who ARE inheritors of the business and money. further, he got where he is today by making friends in the skate scene while touring as a bmx freestyler. this gave him the opportunity to make the video days video linked above, which got him known for making interesting music videos set to skate footage. additionally, through contacts he made at Sassy while doing his bmx tours, he edited Sassy's brother publication Dirt well enough to get a job doing the same thing for The Beastie Boys' Grand Royal publication. That, combined with the reputation earned from doing video days, afforded the opportunity to make videos (such as Sabotage) for the beasties. the rest is history. you'll notice that nowhere in that paragraph do the phrases "inheritance money," "paid for by his parents," "spiegel fortune" or "wealthy" come up. it must be nice to have no idea what you're talking about.
