Were there satanists involved, or real demons? Or a roaming band of serial drowners? Or Tom Waits? If not this is just typical news.

This is a sad and tragic event, I'm a little amazed at how jaded Internet commentary has gotten, even on places like Metafilter. (And yes I realize this is probably not a good post, no need to make light of the woman's ethnic background and age as if it somehow cheapens her life)

I'm guessing it's also a self-link.
In which case I'm terribly sorry for your situation, but this is not what Metafilter is for.

Well, you know, neither are the dope dealers.

Actually, a friendly dope dealer is a lot more believable.

(dhartung, this is still a crap post, but I imagine not much crappier than a lot of the political filter that goes on, but still the links here leave a lot to be desired)

The internet is jaded because every day dozens of people disappear without a trace, and nobody cares. That is a tragedy. The snark is aimed at the news media, because when a young, white, female victim disappears, suddenly the coverage goes around the clock.
According to internet logic, I suppose this means that her being young and white doesn't cheapen her life, us paying special attention in a case like this cheapens the lives all the others who we never hear about and never think about.
That said, I'm hoping things turn out ok.
