Astroturf Alert

AngryRenter.com: The latest conservative media manipulation. As reported on NPR's Day to Day, Republican blowhard Dick Armey and super-rich pal Steve Forbes are behind an astroturf site that opposes help for people in mortgage hell. "We don't have lobbyists in Washington, DC." the site declares. But Armey himself works for one of the biggest lobbying firms in DC, Piper Rudnick. I guess they deserve credit for being so nervy with their lies, but it's otherwise pretty sickening.

This post was deleted for the following reason: Your writeup is sort of weirdly bloggy and your links are just to a couple of sites that, in principle, don't deserve links. This might be an interesting story, but it's not a good post. -- cortex

Their lies are pretty ridiculous, but I do agree that a full-scale bailout is not a good idea.

Tell me you didn't really mean to link to a vCard for Dick Armey.

is your second link ("Armey") a file of some kind, rather than a website?

Wow. What's most ridiculous to me is the juxtaposition of the intentionally clumsy-looking images (puffy, uneven red text and whatnot) and the clearly professionally-produced video. It's like they wanted to look all low-budget and grassroots but just couldn't bring themselves to go through with it.

I am fed up with fed up people renting space on the front page of MetaFilter. They should get their own web-based real estate if they want to push their agenda without adequate supporting links!

Wow, that's funny. Declining home values (and decreased credit availability) decrease the demand/possibility for ownership and drive up rents. Republican bread and butter: getting people outraged into opposing their own interests.

WSJ link. Crap post (should've had these links, at least), but very interesting phenomenon.
