The Hole in the Wall [via mefi projects] is our own interrobang's surrealistic cat story now being serialized at Top Shelf Comics as part of their new Webcomics section, and it's definitely something special - pen & ink & watercolor adventures of two cats exploring a mysterious and dangerous underground landscape. More comics like this will be posted there depending on the popularity of this one, so if you love art, great comics, or cats, you will want to check it out. I was actually going to email interrobang about this story, but what the hell: I'm on a committee at work that's assigned to put together an internal staff wiki. At a meeting earlier this week, we were testing out a bunch of platforms, and wanted to see how one of them handled images; the handiest image was the page 8 jpeg that not_on_display links to (I had it on my desktop because I'd pulled it down and resized it for the "hey, go check out The Hole in the Wall" on my own site). When the image went up, the rest of the staff collectively shit their pants at the awesomeness of it. So a bunch of art museum people in Minnesota are big fans now, and since we I was projecting my screen onto the wall, I guess you could even sort of say that Page 8's been exhibited at a museum. Sort of. On a side note, this Year in Comics strip has me mentally quoting the last line all the time.

Side question: how do you posters figure out that certain people they're linking to happen to be MeFi'ers? Is this a much smaller community than I imagined? Great little story too. Looking forward to seeing where it goes (which will require an updated post, taz!)

Actually, burnmp3s, this one using "mefi's own" is probably a better search, since that tends to be the nomenclature. Congrats, interrobang. That was one of my favorite parts of The Year in Comics.

Thanks, everyone! I'm assuming that part two is going up today, since it's been a week. The story has been divided into four or five chapters, and (I hear) will be running for about a month. And I've gotten the go-ahead for more—on the website, at least—so I'm currently plotting a sequel and will begin drawing this weekend. Thanks for reading it!

I really hate cats, but that was absolutely bloody brilliant. In fact, I may hate cats slightly less as a result of seeing it. Also, is there a term for 'silent' comics like this one?

I love it. The cats are so ...catlike. I love naptime, the freaked out fuzzies, the little cat butt on page 2. The watercolors reminded me of George Herriman, which is very good. So simple. So awesome. I'm going to look at it again.

I love the mouth of the giant sky-cat turning into another tunnel. At least that's what it looks like to me. Reminds me in some ways of these old comics my mom had, maybe they were her father's. The subject matter was totally different (brat children stealing chickens and other 'hijinks' that resulted, I believe, in their very messy death), but the action was almost totally silent. It horrified me, but I loved it. This doesn't horrify me at all, and I still love it.
