I really, really hated this song the first time I heard it, but it actually sounds okay in Youtube mono. It's not a bad song, it's just a lousy mix that's less offensive in low-bitrate mono. I really disagree with their production decisions since the green album; it's not music that needs the overblown, radio-rock production. Pinkerton is manufactured lo-fi, and it's perfect. Everything since green has featured these super-wide, heavy guitars all over the place (among other "stupid mixer tricks"), and I don't think it usually fits the music. I'd love to hear more restrained mixes of some of the recent tunes, because some of them are pretty good songs that are ruined by the album arrangments and mixes. Also, Rivers really looks like a pedo in that mustache. Look at some of his Youtube videos: it's really, really creepy. I can't tell if he's always stoned, or just crazy.

See, the first two Weezer albums were timed right for me to bond with them. Being a teenager around power pop is like being a duckling around, well, anything that moves I guess. So for all I know, this is as good as their old stuff, and I'm just less susceptible. It's pleasantly catchy and harmless, and that sure gives it a leg up over some of the crap they've put out between then and now. And yeah, the video's good.

I was surprised the karate guy was in it. The video was a leak from an audition (he's a stuntman/actor). After he regained his composure he continued and I think he even got the part, but the leaked video made it hard for him for a while. Same kind of fallout with Star Wars kid. I know a lot of co-workers who loved that evolution of dance video. All female, for what it's worth. Something about notalgia for old dances, that OMG!! non-intellectual recognition of stuff you haven't seen for a while, which often provokes laughter or joy, repeated again and again in a short amount of time. As a comedian, it looks to me like a pretty standard closer. Some kind of performance always brings the house down. Why is it funny? Can't answer that but I heard the peals of laughter so empirically it is.

I can't watch the video from work, but I assume the rainbow leggings are a reference to the Fark 'Rainbow Brite' girl. Stolen from this random blog: Post #4, Oct 26, 2007 About a week or so ago there was a thread on Fark that started out being about "slutty" Halloween costumes for girls. Fairly early in the thread a guy posted a pic of a reasonably attractive girl in a dorky looking "Rainbow Brite" costume, saying it was his sister. Soon the thread had degenerated into total chaos and the picture started popping up in other threads all across the Farkiverse. Folks pretty quickly started referring to her as the "new Fark cliché" and I got a couple of e-mails urging me to find her a room here. Meanwhile somebody, presumably either the guy that posted the original picture or the girl herself, contacted someone in power at Fark and requested that the image be removed. I don't have a lot of info on this part, but the original thread was deleted and her image started disappearing in the other threads as well. Possibly a lawsuit was threatened or maybe Drew just had a temporary bout of compassion, but for whatever the reason the request is being complied with whenever a mod or admin runs across the image.

A Web blog. Not, like, a newspaper blog or a TiVo blog or a dishwasher blog. That's just the stick-in-the-mud AP stylebook, there. I thought this was a better song than the BNL one (which I missed), and even if they overlapped a bit on concept, it was a concept that fit the song better. And it's the most likeable song from Weezer in years. Marrying the making-music-I-like thing with Youtubing-me-doing-what-I-like is, well, not exactly brilliant and original, but certainly effective. It's also a better song by far than either Internet People and ... uh ... that other mash-up of all the memes that appeared last year that I've utterly forgotten. On the other hand, BNL did have Dancing Matt, which is the only one of these internet memes that I can actually watch repeatedly, so there.

That said, have you heard any of the other tracks from this doubtless turd of an album? The Greatest Man That Ever Lived is on YouTube, and Heart Songs was but seems to have been taken down. They both make Pork and Beans sound like Across the Sea.

Man even Weezer's own list doesn't have the catching sunglasses with your face viral ad as one of the references, but it's totally there; after the first mentos/diet pepsi clip, when he takes off the goggles and throws them off-camera and they land on the GI Joe PSA guy's face in the next clip.

Interesting sidebar to the appearance of the "Ryan vs. Dorkman" lightsaber guys in the Pork And Beans video: Apparantly, Michael Scott ("Dorkman") was able to convince (or in his words, "begged") the visual effects company, MotionTheory, to let him do all the lightsaber effects for the video. MotionTheory actually granted Dorkman's wish, and he ended up doing 14 visual effects shots for the video, including the lightsaber'ed versions of the drummer's sticks, as well as Miss Teen So. Carolina's microphone saber. Pretty neat. (btw, the band originally wanted the Star Wars Kid, but he not surprisingly turned them down)

THE MADELINE ALBRIGHT AND JEAN-LUC PICARD AND MAHATMA GANDHI OF ALL MAY 2008 YOUTUBE MUSIC VIDEOS So heartwarming to see Chris Crocker and Tay Zonday standing side-by-side together spraying Mentos'ed Diet Coke into the air, right next to the band. Heartwarming to see said Crocker get a much-needed hug from RC in front of that fabled yellow sheet. The most "META"-useful thing about the video is the link list of all the memes used. I had to look up more than half of all the memes. I had never seen that guy in the Orange Crush T-Shirt dancing, unlike 86 million other people. I had never seen the Ryan vs Dorkman battle, and let out an incredible howl out loud near the end of their battle, then loved the twist. I find it most incredulous that Miss South Carolina went along with this. Are we sure that she is not just fancy computer graphics?! And weren't those Kevin Federline images merely swiped from the original video? I think the images of cartoon WEEZER characters in the Gay GI Joe PSA open up new dimensions for entertainment ideas --- Saturday morning Weezer cartoons. The gopher -- that is Dave Grohl's face? All Your Base is a pre-9-11 meme. Has it really been that long!? NEVER FORGET!! How bout the O RLY owl? Lolcats!? Here, this should help: List_of_Internet_phenomena I am strongly attracted to Kelly Shoes, and the headless Daft Bodies. But who isn't!?

I just downloaded the widely-available torrent of the red album (FOR EVALUATION PURPOSES ONLY, I ASSURE YOU). One-quarter of the way through it, I can guarantee that Pork and Beans's lack of experimentation is an aberration, not the norm for this album. It's not a stretch at all to believe what puke & cry said about the single.

Is that a good thing, though, Plutor? I caught a couple of tracks on Youtube before they got killed, and... not too excited about it. I mean, I'll buy it--at least in part to make up for the fact that I "borrowed" and never returned copies of blue and Pinkerton when they came out--but I don't have high hopes.
