Yeah, I think I might have been bit by some kind of virus. I thought it was a partially legit (if possibly... unusual) company until I got to the testimonial video in which he said his robot made him dinner. Wait, what?

Though, there are already similar products. RealDoll, for starters. I'm just not sure any more. There are some pretty realistic facial robots but this probably isn't it.

How long until people have robots that have sex for them, so they can watch lazily from the couch? Just think of the market in a few years or so for online casual dating services... for robots. BRB. I'm going to register some domains.

IT IS TEN TONS OF INDUSTRIAL GRADE FAKE! IT IS SITTING ON A PEDESTAL LABELED "A VERY FAKE THING" IN THE CENTER OF THE MAIN CHAMBER OF THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF FAKE! THERE IS NO LITTLE DETAIL YOU NEED TO PICK UP TO GIVE AWAY THE FAKENESS—IT IS A SHRIEKINGLY IMPLAUSIBLE ADVERTISEMENT FOR A TOTALLY SCI-FI BIT OF TECHNOLOGY THAT TWO SECONDS OF CRITICAL THINKING SHOULD REMIND YOU WOULD BE ALL OVER THE NEWS IF IT WERE ANYTHING APPROACHING REAL, but usually when that happens I just try to take a deep breath and move on because it's admittedly kind of obnoxious.

You know, this brings something to mind . . .

I'm one of those people who actively attempts to avoid curmudgeonhood. I've always been very worried about becoming like my grandmother, who was literally terrified of computers.

So let's say, for the sake of argument, that we do get robots out the other side of the uncanny valley, and people start having sex with them as a matter of course.

Is that going to be my fracture point? Fifty years from now, is not having sex with robots going to be the one personal hangup I never shed that marks me a fossil forever? Because standing right here, right now, that seems like a pretty goddamn healthy hangup to have.

I prefer my replicants less shiny. Please, do you offer a "satin" or "matte" model in addition to the three (only three?!?) choices of hair color? And besides dinner, and the ability to make heavily-accented stand-ins give profess their love, what options are available? More importantly, which parts are upsells? - are we talking "power everything," or am I looking at buying a factory-model Toyota with cloth seats and hand-crank windows - again?

This is really a disappointing offering. Blade Runner, Cherry 2000, and other such films led me to believe I'd have so many more options. If I weren't happily married to a real woman, you can bet I'd be writing a very stern letter right about now. I'm of a mind to write a letter anyway, except the missus is telling me I need to get off the computer and go to bed.

Consider yourselves warned, AI Robotics.

I think it'd actually be cool if they were dipped a bit into the uncanny valley too, cause that'd look damn awesome. To me, it would look truly like the future.

I guess I'm just not as much of a pussy about "OMG IT'S AN ALMOST-HUMAN, HOW CREEPY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

While the site is obviously fake, the tech just doesn't exist yet, the reality will be here one day and I think it'd be beneficial to have a (several) discussions about it.

On the easy side you've got the people who want robot women/men for sex. It might be a bit creepy, but really its no big deal. Where you run into problems are with people who will want robot children for sex, robot dragons, robot dogs, etc.

Is a person with a child shaped sexbot a pedophile, or not? What about pornography produced with insanely realistic child shaped sexbots? Or someone who wants a snuff bot? "Now you can strangle your lover! Enjoy the unique pleasure of the muscle spasams that accompany death! Just $3,999.99!"

Is that a healthy outlet for urges that might otherwise be expressed in reality, or is it training people to do the real thing?

IIRC the longest lasting program in a turing test managed to keep a conversation going for ten minutes before it was found out. Sex, especially specific fantasy scenarios, is likely quite a bit simpler to AI model.

While the LULZ are fun, I think we'd do well to give the issue some serious thought. Extremely realistic sexbots are going to be technologically possible in short order, I think the guestimate of 2050 may be a bit pessimistic. And once its possible you know they'll be manufactured, even if its illegal. So the question is, should it be illegal?

You could compromise by talking about the ranting you'd like to be doing, like in half all-caps but in tiny text to show it's an aside...

I felt this way when people were debating (rather early in the game) whether "The Blair Witch Project" was real (ask your parents, kids, this was way back in the late 90s). Murder? Occult? Videotape? Sure, the major news networks might have missed that one for years.

If nothing else, a couple of minutes perusing fine publications like Maxim and its soft core ilk would demonstrate the particulars of how the kind of social also-ran who would want to date a robot would want his robot girlfriend to look, and no offense to the robot-lady-actress but she's not quite the type, is she? For one thing, she doesn't have ridiculous, enormous comic book breasts. Also, like they would advertise her displayed in a sensible skirt and blouse. Also, like they would advertise "intelligence" as one of her virtues.

Also, what's with the whole "doin' the robot" robot poses thing she's doing in that commercial, that whole bent-arms in front pose? I guess it's supposed to signal to me that she's a robot, in case I didn't catch the whole "this is the perfect girlfriend from AI Robotics!" thing.

On top of all this, wow, what a fresh concept. Wouldn't romance be easier if you could just fuck a robot? Someone should write a book about how a whole community of men replaces their wives with subservient robots. And then they could make a movie out of it! And then, like thirty years later, another terrible remake starring Nicole Kidman.
