"Changes in my cervix throughout the month"

Day Ten - Cervix low and closed. Notice blood spot near os and brown clot near cervix (right). Possibly from vigorous intercourse earlier that day (not mittelschmerz as I am not ovulating yet). All links SFW.

This post was deleted for the following reason: let's go to metatalk and discuss SFW if we have to. this could have been a good post and it was derailed out of the gate. damnit. -- jessamyn

Dude -- on what planet is a blog that displays photos taken up a vagina right on the front page considered SFW?
posted by pineapple at 11:54 AM on June 4, 2008 [2 favorites]

All links SFW

Note: This statement may be a lie depending on your coworkers' sensitivity to very colorful closeup photographs of cervices.

Now I feel like I need to go find a picture of a giant penis just to even things out. But wait - where ever shall I find one? This is the internet! There won't be anything like that out here in the tubes, will there?

In all fairness, if your boss is the kind of person who thinks that a cervix is disgusting they probably don't know what one looks like.

I can't believe that there are people do think that metafilter in general is safe for work. Obviously there are different standards at play.

To be fair (although I don't know that this is FPP material, and I DEFINITELY know that it's not SFW),

as a girl it was pretty interesting to get a photographic look at the cervix of a real human being.

To be fair, a lot of people don't know what a cervix looks like, because their typical contact with them doesn't involve high intensity flashlights.

pwb503: All links SFW.

"Yes, your honor. They're not pictures of the outside of a vagina; they're pictures of the inside. As such, they are not technically a violation of the office policy, but rather medical images."

"I see. Well, given that the defendants' office policy has been established to have been such, it is clear that you were wrongfully terminated through gross, although somewhat understandable, misunderstanding. I see no other course of action but to award you the damages."

"Gee, your honor, that's great! I can't believe it, but pwb503 was right-- those images really were safe for work!"

Lest we rehash the whole "OMG IF YOU'RE WORRIED ABOUT WORK-SAFE WHY ARE YOU ON METAFILTER" argument, I'd just like to point out that the post explicitly stated that it was work-safe.

In all fairness, if your boss is the kind of person who thinks that a cervix is disgusting they probably don't know what one looks like.

In all fairness, my boss doesn't have to think a cervix is disgusting in order for it to not be appropriate for me to be displaying those pictures on my monitor at work.

NSFW doesn't have to mean "pornographic."

It can just mean, "Whether your workplace is cool with a photograph down a big fleshy pink hole bathed in creamy white fluid is going to be your call to make, bub, not mine."

It's a courtesy thing.

The Dutch plural of cervix is "cervixen".

Sorry if the SFW tag is incorrect for some. In my opinion, if you need to be told what you're looking at is "dirty" then it's SFW.
posted by pwb503 at 12:03 PM on June 4, 2008

Has little to do with what my boss thinks; when I saw "SFW", I assumed it wasn't going to be cervix glamour shots.
posted by supercres at 12:12 PM on June 4, 2008

pwb503, I think that's kind of assholish of you.

Based on the text, rational people would instinctively have assumed to proceed with caution, except that you explicitly stated SFW.

In italics, for extra emphasis.

When the photos inside are at the very least questionable, and definitely in the range of medical-TMI -- and yes, possibly could be considered pornographic by the workday-browsing standards of some companies.

Do we know that it's wrong-headed for a medical photo to be considered porn? Sure.

But you intentionally put "SFW" on something you knew some people would find problematic. And based on your comment just now, it appears that you did so to prove some kind of point.

Let me guess: you are the "very talented boyfriend with a headlamp".

I think it's only SFW if you work in the cervix industry.

Thanks for the link. I've never thought too much about my cervix and the pictures were interesting. A little grody but definitely interesting.

There is NO WAY a baby comes out of there. It's all a big lie, right?

"NSFW" isn't about what is "disgusting". It's about what could get a person fired.

HURF DURF READING THE INTERNET AT WORK aside.

Ah, personal opinions. Glad to see you have some. However, I'd like to point out to you the context in which Metafilter uses the NSFW/SWF tags. As in most of us are not at home holding down the couch springs, but at work, probably in an office environment, with mixed sexes and cultures, where the sight of a coworker staring down into the cervix of an anonymous internets may be construed as something other than work, research or time-wasting. As in it may turn out that said activity may be unexplainable, even in the context of NSFW/SFW tag discussion.

As in you have some maturing to do.

TheOnlyCoolTim: "Grow the fuck up."

By this logic, goatse.cx is totally acceptible SFW material, and anyone who is grossed out by it should grow the fuck up. It's just a bloody picture inside a human's totally natural orifice.

pineapple wrote: Dude -- on what planet is a blog that displays photos taken up a vagina right on the front page considered SFW?

The same one on which an advert for Irn Bru is considered NSFW.

pwb503's trolling is a shame, though, as the cervical diary is a fascinating link to post.

If it hadn't been for the big fat All Links SFW disclaimer on the FPP.

As someone that gets to look at similar views every day, this is a pretty damn good pictorial if only so any man or woman can see just exactly what things look like deep in the vaginal canal. Good job.
