Obama loosened up a bit after a while but still ... yeah, academic.

Clinton was actually endearing in all her tightassedness. I liked her a lot more when she was being gawky and real this year.

Also, how fucking rude is it of Bush to budge in on the hand-drummer like that? I don't give a shit if he's the President.

I'd be all, "Shit... dammit... sure, just point the beat at him and hope he can keep a rhythm... smile for the cameras... think of a way to tell the folks back home that we're not getting any rain this year after all..."

I feel very American, for this minute or two.
Unashamed.
And I voted for Senator Clinton!

Now that I've recovered from my Obama lust attack.....you know what I liked best about that video? He was HOLDING BACK. Motherfucker can bust a MOVE, but didn't, for propriety's sake or something, and it makes me tremble to think how he'd get his groove on were he not The Nominee. Holy fuck, he'd rip it UP, you KNOW IT.

I've always wondered at the entirely rhythmless folk like GW, can they not hear the music at all?

There was this video I saw ages and ages ago of Ronald and Nancy Reagan at some, I don't know what event, anyway there was a marching band or some such thing and everyone was clapping along with the music and Ronald was totally, utterly unable to clap in time with everyone else. He kept staring at Nancy's hands trying to figure it out and she kept trying to coach him along but he just could not for the life of him keep the beat. He looked like a palsy victim.

I really wish I remembered where I saw that clip. It's one of those images that just sticks in your brain forever. I'm sure it's on youtube somewhere.

And I bet that djembe player died a little inside when GW started whacking on his drum uninvited.

i cannot prove this with science, but even having completely refused to watch the bush dancing video i knew in my soul that it would include cloddish stupid bullying behavior. and per Navelgazer it looks like i was right. of course guessing that bush would pull a dick move doesn't make me a soothsayer or sage - to quote obama, "it's a low bar."

Shortly after the first time I saw that video of Bush, I had a nightmare that it was me up there in his place, and while I was trying to fight against it and knew it was wrong, my body moved itself and I felt myself make those same moves. My stomach hurts even remembering it.

2004 was the first presidential election I got to vote in, and I was so hopeful that the country would come to its senses. My stomach felt that same way then too. Good grief am I hoping we'll stop this jerk-ass dancing this time around.

And yeah, Navelgazer, that's the first thing I thought of when I saw this post as well.

I believe in among speakers of Wolof, high-ranking men cultivate a clumsy inability to articulate, and employ professionals to speak on their behalf. This disdain for talking demonstrates their status. Likewise, in our society, powerful men do not dance or betray any feeling for rhythm. That is the job of their social inferiors, whom they may graciously deign to admire or occasionally even pay.

This is the origin of the stiff white honky. In their dark past, Celts and Teutons and Slavs danced fearful dances deep in the forest and sang. David danced his triumph in the streets. But their descendants who aspire to power clench their buttocks, constrain their hips and leave movement to others, in the same way that they disdain many other manifestations of fun and enjoyment. Ruling is serious business.

Both Obama and Hillary wanted to dance but were holding back. Obama's dance hinted at technical experience, Hillary's hinted at personality. A complete inverse of the primaries.

This is going to be a hard fought campaign and McCain might well win. Painquale makes a very perspicuous point though, as usual. But Hillary seemed to be restraining the real person that we would probably all like a lot more than the over-spun candidate, yet Baz was holding back because he didn't want to show off. (I know; the primaries are over. It's interesting anyway).

It makes me happy to know that, for all my country's problems and flaws, she is still a nation where the black man who is in all probability going to be the next President can dance with an out-of-the-closet lesbian on her nationally broadcast daytime talk show. Viva America.
