I'm all grumpy today too. Frowny face for emphasis :( This typography based lecture style seems to be all the rage at the moment - I've got clients phoning left and right wanting us to jolly up their presentations with big, bold, sans serif fonts and, sometimes, whacky little pictures standing in for nouns. We usually add a little more anti-aliasing onto the embedded fonts though. (Or have I missed the point entirely.)

Okay.... recap: it asks me if I think the world is a mess. I said no. (it may have a lot of problems, sure, but a mess? No.) It says 600 million girls disagree with me, and shows me a blinking white ball. Whilst claiming again the world is a kind of a mess, which I already disagreed with. After that, nothing changes on screen. What does it expect me to do? Visit each of those 600 million girls and tell them they are wrong? Perhaps some advertiser somewhere didn't think his (or her?) cunning plan all the way through.

I kinda wanted to like it, but it seemed more concerned with the marketing than telling people about the actual plan. I tried to skip the movie, but the screen just hung. Likewise with the link at the bottom. Maybe the server is overwhelmed because there's a 8MB Flash file running everytime someone visits the home page...

I wanted it to be good - and I earnestly thought it was going to be good. Except that the reason I thought it was going to be good was that I thought there'd be the scritchy scratch of a record halfway through and then a diversion into the unlikelihood of any given girl from any given shithole amounting to anything - with brief but graphic detours into domestic drudgery, the relative values of boys vs girls in a rural third world environment, standards of education, rape, genital mutilation and all that jazz. Something that would remind me that, while girls are awesome, they're also pretty much fucked and maybe that might be something I might want to help to stop. Instead I walked away whistling, feeling pretty good that girls are awesome and all was right with the world. You know, Girl gets cow, girl milks cow, girl becomes CEO of Esso. That kind of thing. I don't think that was the intention

Since the link isn't working, I'm going to make up my own theory as to what The Girl Effect is: In a dark dystopian future, the forces of evil have taken over, and it's up to one plucky 12 year old girl and her time traveling friends to alter the course of events which lead to the End Of The World. In the pilot episode, she travels back to 1842 and uses explosives to create fractures in the stone foundation of what will one day become the headquarters of the Mind Control division of the government, then when she jumps back to her future, her friends are able to topple the building effortlessly using little more than the power of love and a turbo diesel battering ram. After that a J-Pop theme song will roll over the credits. Does that about cover it?

Why not help dudes too? Because girls often are not allowed education, not allowed to better themselves so that they have a measure of independence. No matter how awful boys' lives are in any country, the girls are (almost?) always living worse lives. The goal here is to get girls educated and then to help them with small business loans. "Let's put her in a school uniform and see her get a loan to buy a cow and use the profits from the milk to help her family." And so on. They'll have income, fewer (but happier and healthier) children, fewer diseases, more freedom, and generally better lives. You could also target boys, but boys don't need as much help getting an education; if anyone is going to get an education, it will be the boys, and if anyone's going to be forced to stay home, it will be the girls. And if you're going to provide microcredit to poor people, consider that men always have an easier time getting a job, while women are more likely to have to make their own work, which is where a small loan is so useful - buying a sewing machine, cows, goats, and so on. Also, women are more likely to repay their loans and more likely to use their profits to better their families' lives: women are a better investment than men are.

I could string together an explanation of why the word "girl" bothers me, why it bothers me even more to see the word "girl" surrounded by the word "flies," just like one of those manipulative photos they used to use to sell fake child sponsorships. Why the whole thing feels culturally regressive in its way of talking about poverty and progress. But you know what? I work closely with organizations like these guys, and I'm well aware that everyone is painfully underfunded. So I'll just quietly back out and wish them the best.
