Long Day's Journey Into Night

To kick off the northern hemisphere's summer solstice, an old favorite from the original Eddie Cochran, The Who, Van Halen, Blue Cheer, Brian Setzer, T. Rex, Bruce Springsteen, yes, even Hanson. But wait, last but not least, Alvin and the Chipmunks.

Ah, Blue Cheer, bless their hairy acid-addled hearts. Along with Sabbath, they are the birth squalls of that dysfunctional musical child called Metal.

I thought about doing this post a few days ago! Thanks for picking up my slack. My inspiration for thinking about doing it was a Springsteen performance of it from 1978, couldn't find it on the internet. I really enjoy the Blue Cheer version. I thought this was a Who song for years.

Here's a crummy video of Rush doing the song.

Ah, Blue Cheer, bless their hairy acid-addled hearts. Along with Sabbath, they are the birth squalls of that dysfunctional musical child called Metal.

And punk. There's a lot of Dickie Peterson in Johnny Rotten and Jello Biafra's hortatory vocal stylings.

When Rush's Feedback EP came out, I made a mix-CD of the originals and all the previous covers in my record collection (about five each). When I played Blue Cheer's cover of "Summertime Blues" for a young friend (a drummer and Rush fan* born about fifteen years after Vincebus Eruptus) he thought it was about the funniest track he'd ever heard. "He (the drummer) can't even play eight notes!"

It's hard to convey what a record like that meant to folks who weren't there at the time.

*I'm still working on "former"
