As a white, male, technically-inclined user between the ages of 25 and 40, I think I can bring unique perspective to this discussion.

No wait, that's a pretty common one.

Well, I'm happy to see that none of this applies to MeFi.

Not really, thanks. I don't really like that show... and I don't think I'd have anything good to say about it. I figure, you know... why bring you guys down?

Well almost nothing.

That was excellent. Thanks.

honest knave: You know, I remember when nobody knew about Red V. Blue. Now they can be heard all over the internets...

Yeah, I remember watching "Why Are We Here?" and "Red Gets a Delivery" with a few friends while we took a break from playing Halo on XBConnect back in 2003 when the clips first came out. That seems so long ago now. I was mildly entertained, it being April 20th and all, but nobody seemed to enjoy it as much as my friend Zack. He laughed at everything, and against are wishes continued to call the Warthog a Puma from then on. The thing is, Zack was terrible at Halo, compared to us anyways, and he couldn't keep up. He would get pissed off and throw his control at the ground when we three shot him, or used the reload trick. I felt bad each time I sneaked up behind him and assassinated him. I knew he was likely to flip out over any death so I tried to make sure he got the first shot, but that usually made things worse(him still dying, screaming "WTF, I shot you first!").

I think that's why he liked Red vs. Blue so much. It allowed him to enjoy Halo in a way that skilled gamers never needed. Pwnd.

"Well, that's a given, you know how much we all value copyright."

"Wow, a new user... That's Great! We'd be happy to show you the ropes!"

I know I'm as guilty of GNE nostalgia as anyone but one interesting thing about it is that in fact newbies to the game were all warmly embraced - and it was built into the system.

One of the game's key metrics was something called Social Index and one of the richest sources of pumping up your Social Index was to befriend newbies - essentially because each player had a finite number of "Friend" points to give away and friendless newbies were thus "cash-rich".

Looked at one way, it is a bit cynical. But one of the results is that newbies to the game would be greeted by all these older, richer players showering them with gifts. I thought the idea of new players all being given something finite and valuable, which must be given away, to be an innovative way of solving the old newbie-hate problem.

This made me laugh kind of hard a couple of times. If I were drinking milk, I would totally have snorted some out my nose. I love the main bippie's Texas-sounding voice. "And the smoke monster! Dooon't git me started on the smoke monster!" Thanks!
