Ah, finally. The console cowboys with whom we must be able to jam in cyberspace.

I wonder what became of her? She looks flushed with the excitement of being the girl for once. Reminds me of pictures of me in the HS band, from around the same time.

Dissapointing... they look nothing like Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie....

Isn't that Sebastian Bach from Skid Row?

Heh, those herds of "vaxen" are awesome. I wonder what the correct term for a collection of "vaxen" would be... a "? of Vaxen"?

... in response to A-Gal on pg 30 of 2600, Scribbles
says she's the sexiest hacker on the nets. Hmmmmm, I'm inclined
to agree with that. I'm sure Control-C will agree too, especially
after he trailed her for half of SCon.

I didn't know cDc, l0pht and LOD hung out so much in person. I don't know why that surprises me really, but it somehow does.

Speaking of hackers, there should be a meetup at the last HOPE.

Around 1993 my then-boyfriend took me to the then-current L0pht space. It was like all my fourth-grade dreams of dating Matthew Broderick had come true.

I'll be at some of the Last Hope, although I have to bail Friday and Saturday evenings for a wedding in Westchester. A meetup would be fun.

Oh man, I forgot about Lechmere.

I didn't get around to discovering phone phreaking until just after all the Baby Bells had switched pretty much all their pay phones over to out-of-band signalling. So, no felonious fun for me. I still have my blue box though.

I was sort of "meh" about this until I got to this picture and it really hit home for me what a community these people had. The picture itself isn't really that different from any other in this photoset, but I used to know one of those guys (l0pht) on IRC back in the day. From what I remember, he was a chill guy and he taught me a bunch of useful stuff. If everyone in those older-school hacker groups was as cool as l0pht, then these pictures all seem a little more awesome. Of course, they could be two different l0phts, but what are the odds of that?

Oh wait. L0pht is the group. I'm a dumbass. But I could have sworn...

I remember asking my mom for a L0pht Heavy Industries ("Feds love L0pht!") t-shirt when I was 11 or so and her being like "I don't know what you're talking about, but no, you may not have that shirt".

These guys were pretty dope. I'd say in the late 90s they were probably the coolest people on the internet, if you were the kind of preteen girl who was totally obsessed with hackers. Now that I know what they look like...well, let's just say computer geeks really haven't changed much in the last fifteen years.

It was only when I came upon The Aurora Boreliteness of The Legion of Doodz that I realized that I was born to soon to witness the truly awesome in this world.

How many of these people do you really think were hardcore hackers? I say that having met about half of them at various 2600 meetings and such in the 1990s. A lot of scenesters with red boxes and such, but not a lot of Wargames-type stuff going on -- at least that was my impression. (I was an admitted hanger-on.) But, then agin, I never met the L0pht people -- they always seemed more serious and dangerous from what I read.

It is a somewhat strange feeling coming across these pictures again. Very hard to believe that it has been fifteen years, my memories are still pretty strong. The Grill-a-thon pictures, for instance, were all taken by Count Zero with the first digital camera I had ever actually seen.

So it goes.

Not sure I belong in quite the same category of Holy!-ness as Wozniak, but thanks for the thought. Mudge is a busy bee these days (as he ever was, I suppose).

For the Record? Jason Scott *IS* a hoot at parties, as long as you don't let him seize control of the video-projector -- When that happens, all hope is lost.

Speaking of Hope -- cDc will be making an appearance at the Final Hackers On Planet Earth conference in NYC from July 18-20 at the Hotel Pennsylvania.

Be There or Be an Equilateral Rectangle.

Mission Control, Out.
