"Blue Suede Shoes" and "Vogue" were funny. "Star Wars" was OK. "Samuel L. Jackson is about to murder John McCain in cold blood while endorsing Barack Obama" was absurdly distasteful.

Although it does illustrate that John McCain stands his ground even in the presence of heavily armed thugs and doesn't take cover under the table like you-know-who.

The Vogue version is fabulous, though I can't find a working version (including the one linked above . . . "We're sorry, this video is no longer available.").But this one is just disturbing. And I think the one with Rick Astley would be better if either Rick or the senator were placed off-center so you could see them both.
I would like to see one set to "Afternoon Delight." And I would especially like McCain's head to be placed atop M.C. Hammer's body in the "U Can't Touch This" video. Come on, internets. Don't fail me now.

yes, the early film video would have been awesome if it had been converted to silent film titles, perhaps with many exclamation marks (as the whole point was to make McCain more exciting) - even the end crowd could have been all "Yaaaaaaay!"

There was no green screen originally. McCain's speech just happened to have the world's most unflattering backdrop.
Colbert was just among the earliest to realize what a remarkable opportunity this presented for the nation's After Effects jockeys.

Admittadly this is just blathering at this point, but a small part of me thinks that in a way this silliness is going to go a ways towards McCain not winning the election in Nov. If it had been a one-off, something that lasted a week or so, then it would be no big deal, but an ongoing, popular, national outlet that just keeps on making fun of McCain in this manner will (I think) undermine McCain bit by bit. Another week or so will make it near a month's worth of high tech mockery.

It pulls the rug out from underneath McCain's big advantage: his "Presidentialness." Many who are going to vote for mccain cant give any reason other than they just see him as more trustworthy and fit for office. Seeing one or two of these clips will undermine that, at least on a subconscious level.
Have these Make McCain Interesting clips made it to the mainstream news outlets at all?

GOOD.
No one in power, or aspiring to it, should be immune to mockery. EVER. It takes the paternal edge (what you called "Presidentialness") off of candidates and makes it possible to relate to them as people. Our 'dent shouldn't be our daddy, but our lackey.
A lot of the shine on the American experience has faded as of late, but at least we still have a healthy spirit of mockery towards our rulers. As long as that remains there is a little hope.

I'm pretty sure the Comedy Central / YouTube crowd does not form a large part of McCain's constituency.

Well certainly not his core constituency. But in American presidential politics, especially in the last 20 years, who wins the middle wins the election. Given that all the candidates, McCain too (numerous times), have appeared on The Daily Show, that 1st tier representatives appear on the Colbert Report I think they (these popular shows) play a factor, especially in the middle ground. Yeah, it's not going to win or lose the election but I think it could help push it one way or the other, especially if McCain is increasingly seen as a figure to be mocked.

Plus Colbert could affect how the other news organizations relate to the McCain campaign. McCain is a pretty revered figure among all the major outlets, but Colbert is shaping up to be a pretty major force. It won't shape the election or anything, but it could nudge it.
So uh... no Colbert bump over this I'm assuming.
