In defense of mass media, I did have a vague idea that the president of Equatorial Guinea was an evil man.

The Slate article claims that there's little coverage of Equatorial Guinea in traditional journalism, which is true; however, there is at least one good book (The Wonga Coup) about the crazy collision (and collusion) of oil, corruption, mercenaries and dictatorship that appears to be the country's ongoing fate.

Wow. I hadn't heard anything about this and that is shocking. Why don't we hear more about Equatorial Guinea?

In the west we generally don't hear about places with little/no economic or strategic value.

Spend a week in Africa and you will figure this out.
