Matmos provides a song-by-song exposition of their synth-only* album Supreme Balloon, including explicit pics of the gear they used. Highlights include the Electronic Valve Instrument, the Coupigny, & everything else.

*Mostly - all sound sources were synths, some software controllers were used.

This is an awesome link. If you ever want to see a great show, Matmos is a must-see...these guys go way beyond stereotypical "knob twiddling." You'll never see people having more fun playing balloons, dry ice, and snails.

This is definitely very cool. Also just wanted to plug the new Matmos album as being quite awesome. I've always liked Matmos, but Supreme Balloon is the first album of there's that gels as an album, and not as a novelty collection.

Peculiar timing-- Drew just txted that they will be doing a live set tonite on Hollow Earth Radio at 6p pacific (couple hours from now.) So tune in if you can, I will be... We have the original watercolor of the supreme balloon cover on our office wall!

Wait, so it's now avant-garde to play an album entirely on real synthesizers, as opposed to VST plugins? Fuck, I'm old. Also, I hate software synths.

When I saw Matmos perform at UCI a few years ago the main instrument being used on the final song was one of the member's bare butt being slapped for percussion. The levels were breaking into the red on that one, let me tell you. I could not help thinking of this seeing that they have posted "explicit pics" of their "gear".

Huh. Does this mean that if I go to elaborate lengths to document, with photos and long discursive explanations about the gear involved, my next CD release, that I, too, can achieve this level of linkage and breath of the masses? I can even throw in a gratuitous image of a score of some lute music by a French music publisher of the late 17th century, if that will help ... I mean, for what it's worth, I've got two gigs coming up (New York and Boston) and could use the PR.

aldus- Probably not... Altho, if you do write long explanations of the gear you use, i'd love to check it out. But that's because i have a bad case of gear-lust. Also, giving away free digital copies of your album only gets you three-quarters of a million dollars in the first weekend if you're Trent Reznor.
