If you can't make it out to Dunhuang, this place is also pretty neat.

Wow. They look amazing. I've been to the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Shanxi. Directly across the street is an open pit coal mine. The Dunhuang appear to be in better condition. Much better.

Went there in winter - got an English speaking guide all to myself. Apparently there's 6 thousand people per day in summer.
