You know, I don't have an iPhone (yet?). But I'm not sure I need to spend that much time picking something out that'll be largely obscured by icons.

The whole point of a portable device is to turn off the display just as soon as you can get away with it, to save power. (I did a little bit of work on Rockbox on this; just fractions of seconds saved here and there can add up to hours more battery life.) So a wallpaper -- something you look at when nothing else is going on -- seems a low priority.

This is pretty cool. Thanks. And yeah, the icons will potentially obscure the wallpaper, but part of the fun of owning a device like an iPhone is pimping it out just so.

There are about ten billion mobile phone wallpaper websites. Personally I like the animated ones for the eye candy, but that's just me. Like orthogonality, I have my prefs set up to switch off the display immediately following most screen interactions, and to not even light up during most voice interactions.

Also, on the iPhone, you must look at your wallpaper when you activate your phone, as you slide your finger to unlock it, before your icons pop up. So you have to look at it for at least a second every time you use the phone. Some of these wallpapers are quite nice, thanks defenestration.

The best part is the new version of Mobile Safari will allow you to save images directly onto the phone's photo album, thereby bypassing the whole go to computer/save to iPhoto/sync to phone hassle.

There are some icon themes that have translucent/transparent icons so your wallpaper is more visible. The one I use is available in Installer.app. Then again, I don't know that I want to see any more of this. And don't forget, using an iPhone is like driving a bright, yellow Hummer.

when you build a locked down system and don't let anyone develop for it... You're kidding, right? A year from now there will be more third party apps in use on iPhones than on any other platform.

On a related note, can someone out there who has bought an iTouch tell me if they're disappointed they didn't go for an iPhone instead? There's a selection of both around my workplace. The touch is terrific: it pretty much is an iPhone without the phone, and it comes in bigger sizes (up to 32Gb). One feature I didn't notice was "missing" until someone moaned about it was the camera. With the new iPhone, GPS becomes a third difference. But the wifi-browsing and e-mail experience (with wifi) is exactly the same, and of course all the music functionality is identical. In other words, the only real market difference so far has been "wanted a phone or didn't want a phone."

Dave Faris I'm perfectly happy with my iTouch. However, I bought it expressly for watching movies and listening to music on my bus/train commute. I already have a perfectly good phone that I use for talking, and didn't want the additional data plan expense. I do use the wifi at home to check my email or do quick web stuff if the pc is turned off or is in use by the wife.

A big difference on the Touch is that there are no hardware volume buttons as there are on the iPhone.

That would be a mess. You only see the wallpaper before you swipe to unlock the phone.

Just a heads up. Between some previous posts here, and some emails from the upcoming Tor site, I have discovered iPhone wallpapers work beautifully for my Palm TX (I use Zlauncher).
