Words of warning

Words of warning: Watch out for squirrels. Keep your kids with you, but don't put them here. And finally, some advice for golfers. (links go to pictures)

If you like those, there are more at Funnysign.com and Swanksigns.org (dedicated to the art of mocking public works).

A variant on the 'kids' sign:
"Unaccompanied children will be given an espresso and a free puppy."*

I saw one that said they'd be given to the circus, too...

I recently came across the flickr pool Stick Figures in Peril. Good times.

We have a warning sign for drivers here, SLOW -- Children Playing, which always makes me think we have "slow" (as in retarded) children here.

I love funny signs; most of my vacation photos are of signage. Yes, this is sad. I took one in, I think, Bennington, VT of a "Bingo for AIDS" sign and thought, "wow, that's a really lousy prize."

mike3k - that was my 6th grade teacher's frequent joke when no one in the class knew the answer to a question -- "I guess the sign out front is right!"

(This was the mid-70s. No doubt he'd get fired for saying it today.)

It's kind of hard to see in this photo of the packaging that the components for the Xbox 360 come in, but it has a sequence of images of a baby asphyxiating itself with a plastic bag.

I suspect that I shouldn't have laughed nearly as hard as I did when I discovered it. But I'm a bad person.

A gentle warning: If your kid is eaten by an alligator, just take home a raccoon or a rabbit. They're all pretty much the same.

I guess these are commonplace, but I was really confused the first time I saw a warning sign saying "CHURCH" in a local neighborhood. Like, should I start praying or what?

I will forever remember the drowning-head-first baby diagram on 16L mayo pails we used to order, back in the restaurant days. I always assumed this was the result of someone not grinding the baby enough before mixing with the mayo.

Yup, that is a church!

I suppose the sign in the first link would have been totally called for when I rescued a squirrel who was trapped in a garbage can in Montreal, a couple of years ago, but then again I had the presence of mind to lift the entire top of the garbage can up behind, rather than stick my hand into the flap.

Hah! The golf sign is on the ninth hole at Steven's Park golf course in Oak Cliff (Dallas), Texas. The glass window is about 20 yards behind the green.

Bizarrely that warning is a compromise :
In February, the Consumer Product Safety Commission ended five years of deliberation on what to do about five-gallon buckets, which it deemed dangers to toddlers who might fall into them and drown. In May 1994, the agency tentatively had decided to order manufacturers to redesign the buckets. However, it has now decided merely to require warnings on the pails, [Rock Island Argus-Chicago Tribune, 2-12-95]

Can you imagine trying to design a bucket that would stop toddlers from falling in yet still being able to be used for all the myriad things buckets do?

I remember seeing this sign in North Carolina when I was visiting my buddy at Fort Jackson, SC.

It was great...

Dear me there's a golf course that near where I live? And a stupid one at that? Why have the glass window there? They built the golf course knowing people were gonna have golf balls flying around. That's stupid. Why don't they wall it up?

Why would anyone in their right mind play golf in Dallas? It's hot and humid and gross and annoying here. George Carlin was right. We should take all the golf courses and give the land to the homeless. Put shelters there. Golf is a pathetic excuse for a 'sport.' Great. Yet another reason why I'm disappointed in my home town.
