I mean at first, I was all, hey, awesome, they're gonna get all kinds of people into chess! Turns out the only people they want getting their learn on are the ones who can afford to throw away $48 automatically renewed annually.
(It's extra lame how they don't spring the membership fee on you until after you've submitted all your information.)

I got a bit excited about this at first, until I read the comments about the membership fee.
A teacher at my alt-ed program (which has a high percentage of African-American students) started teaching chess last year, and ended the year with a tournament. I saw all sorts of positives to this in terms of teaching cause/effect, logic, planning, strategy, etc. The kids loved it and took much pride in the skills they learned.
Too bad this site seems to be into the "making money" aspect.

Good grief... $48/year? http://www.redhotpawn.com/ is, mostly, free and very very good. Doesn't have any AI to play against though, at least not that I know of.
