Some death metal dude gives an interview about his gay partner and their involvement in the fashion scene. Am I missing something or is that about it?

I think that's about it... and one video for color. Definitely NSFW... not terribly shocking or stirring. I don't understand the appeal of death metal I guess.

Death metal serves the important societal function of allowing very macho, homophobic, tough-guys to wear makeup and dance shirtless with each other. See also Kiss and the Insane Clown Posse.

The shock here stems from the fact that Gaahl is one of the bigger loudmouths in a movement full of blowhard pontificators who take any opportunity to ramble at length about their fascist ideologies that draw on Nordic nationalism, a totally butchered understanding of Nietzsche, Occultism, and sometimes outright Neo-Nazism. Gaahl has run his mouth for ten years about how he embodies pure evil, masculinity and is completely above the social codes and morals systems that guide mere mortals. So while it's maybe not entirely inconsistent that he turned out to be a gay man who was in the closet the whole time and really just wanted to make women's clothes, there is a touch of irony there.

True Norwegian Black Metal - a great documentary on Gaahl, best bit is where he nearly kills off the film crew by taking to the top of ginormous mountain

Oh I should ad, by 'great' I mean unintentionally hilarious.

On the subject at hand:

The juxtaposition of this very clean-looking mod against the overly made-up, greasy haired and metal banded colossus standing triumphantly in front of his flock wherein he preaches whatever it was, all I got was something about god and giants, is what this post is about? I assume that the brown-haired fellow in the nice black coat and the lead singer are one in the same. I compare this to other artists who also enjoy a bit of grand-standing (Bono comes to mind) and the image is humorous. I guess I compare this guy to my image of Rob Zombie, IMO another musician who has fallen victim to his own fame.

To be fair, being "a gay man who was in the closet the whole time and really just wanted to make women's clothes" is reasonably compatible with the above, at least from an (anti) Christian viewpoint. cf. Halford et al.

At any rate, I'd say that the overarching theme in black metal (including the "fascist ideologies that draw on Nordic nationalism blah blah etc") is "might makes right; do what thou wilt". Thus, if he wants to be a fashion guy, then good for him, especially since none of the scene shit-talkers are likely to take a break from whining long enough to stop him. At least he has the guts it takes to follow his interests openly.

Can't seem to track down those 'Bad Black Metal Band' photos... but there was a loooot of over-compensation going on there. But of course, anything a little too macho runs the risk of falling into camp.

Yeah, not really on the same wavelength. For example the band Mayhem used a photo of its own dead vocalist (nsfw) as an album cover; the band member who took the photo was subsequently murdered by a member of a different band. Then the church burnings, etc. There was genuine psychopathy going on in the early Nordic black metal scene, which eventually simmered down to the more ideological fascism supported by Ghaal's band Gorgoroth among others.

The Straightener,

y'see I rank that right up there with ingesting a lot of food coloring and painting a picture with your own poo. Perhaps up is not quite the word I should use but I believe you catch my meaning.

Closeted gay man wildly overcompensates, then comes to terms with himself. Big fucking deal. Call me when Lifetime makes this into a movie.

I guess I speak for a total of one here but this kind of blows my mind. I guess it shouldn't maybe, but it does.

BTW if you go to the original Norwegian article, there's an ad for Historie magazine under the article featuring two sample covers, one a Viking funeral pyre, the other a big glowering portrait of Adolf Hitler. If you order now for 29.50, they'll even throw in a set of grill knives.
