John C. Frémont is a secret Catholic.
This is a great little piece of history. Thanks, EarBucket.

I bet John McCain is a secret Buddhist, just waiting until he gets elected to turn Washington into Lhasa West.

If he'd been elected, do you really think we wouldn't be up to our eyeballs in popery by now?
Laugh it up, ye gullible.

We've still only elected one Catholic as president in the subsequent 150 years.

We're up to our eyeballs in popery already: 5 of the 9 SCOTUS members are Catholic, as well as who knows how many members of Congress. INSIDIOUS!

Painted as a liberal, anti-slavery, Papist loony who loved Negroes, perverts and immigrants,
And this was the GOP candidate. How times have changed.

It's odd that the writeup specifically excludes discussion of, and only of, the black interlocuter, but maybe that was more than the author wanted to bite off for one go?

A friend of mine just asked about the black guy too, so I found a larger version of the image.
He seems to be saying: "De Poppylation of Color cimes in first--arter dat you may do wot you pleases"

Oh, the cimes is comes. That dot is from the y above. All the other misspellings are there for an obvious reason. I wonder why he's dressed like that. Oh, maybe he's "uppity".

I wonder if "Poppylation" is a pun with regards to drug seeking behavior. Granted, the whole poppy/opium issue was traditionally related to Chinese immigrant labor on the railroads, but perhaps, by using the word "Color" he meant not just black people (as the picture implies) but all non-white individuals.
Or maybe it's a racists slur against "ebonics" of some sort. Though, with the capitalization, I'm guessing it's implying Chinese immigrants as well.

Interesting that the Freemounter is an old-maid-type.
I think it's because the cartoonist figured that portraying advocates of sexual promiscuity as hot, nubile babes wouldn't exactly lead the reader to oppose their nefarious agenda.

Ah, yes The Great Pathfinder. I guess if he'd been alive in the early part of this century and running for president then it wouldn't have been his supposed Catholicism that would be a problem but more his fruity French-looking name.
