This is like Playboy with the fuzzy focus and unrealistic perfection, might find in Home and Garden magazine. Someone posted a food porn site the other day that is more Hustler with nitty gritty character, perfection on its own terms.

after flipping threw a few images, i was reminded what c.s. lewis said about porn and food.

Now suppose you come to a country where you could fill a theatre by simply bringing a covered plate on to the stage and then slowly lifting the cover so as to let every one see, just before the lights went out, that it contained a mutton chop or a bit of bacon, would you not think that in that country something had gone wrong with the appetite for food? And would not anyone who had grown up in a different world think there was something equally queer about the state of the sex instinct among us? One critic said that if he found a country in which such striptease acts with food were popular, he would conclude that the people of that country were starving.

I'm very glad that food has become groovy. I like watching people cook, I like to interpret what they are cooking, I like talking about foodstuffs. I rarely follow a recipe except if it's a baking thing. It's just nice to almost intuitively know what goes with what. It makes me think that all of these years watching food shows and buying simple food magazines when it wasn't cool is finally paying off. Amazing tasting stuff is at the end of my fingertips! I can cook you something wonderful, you just have to be wonderful enough to deserve it! I feel like this is my superpower. I know how to make gravy from scratch. I can Make Something Yummy For You With Meat! Oh thank god I lived long enough for this to be a good thing! My casserole is delicious and packed with nutritious ingredients and I can whip it up quicker than you can drive to Hungry Jacks!

What a surprisingly ill-considered domain name. When I think food porn, I inevitably think about the snuff food porn on Korean shopping channels, that I wrote about here several years ago. The money shot:

The food porn, which is so obscenely fixated on wetness and bubbling, on glistening surfaces and suddenly-exposed textures, can be depended upon to make me a little nauseous, and since I can afford to lose a couple of pounds, losing my appetite for a while isn't such a bad thing. It must be said that these food porn producers have their job down to a fine art. They are incredibly skilled at eroticizing foodstuffs : so much so that I sometimes worry that I'll wake up mid-sleepwalk one night in flagrante delicto with our store of kimchi. The models tend to be on the sexy side of the street, too, which is certainly not a bad thing. As I was saying before I so rudely interrupted myself : the screen at this particular moment was occupied by a pair of hands, turning and displaying a live crab, which was waving its legs about in dismay. Understandably. You'd be distressed too. With no warning, to the jaunty retro-pop harmonies of the title song from the mostly harmless Tom Hanks vehicle, 'That Thing You Do', the hands proceeded to rip open the shell of the soon-to-be-not-so-live crab, as its little legs went into spastic 'oh-my-god-I'm-being-dismembered' gyrations, and expose its glistening, wet guts to the camera, which dutifully zoomed in. It was a weird combination of the usual food-porn with sudden, unexpected violent death, and it left me a little... discombobulated.

Our concern manifested as health fads and sudden hot flashes of "forbidden fruits" and "super foods". Working to the bone in flaccid spine-killing cubicles till only crates of medicines could fight back the hemorrhoids, we flogged ourselves mercilessly in expensive gymnasiums to attain some image of the noble savage, pure and fit, bounding through the dreamscape we lived in - then secretly gorged on designer donuts and boutique icecream in the blessed privacy of our homes. Oh it's so bad, we thought. But we deserve it! Over time, the feelings about food became more complex. It was rude and improper to eat certain unhealthy or particularly indulgent foods in public - no one wanted to see that, be reminded of those animal lusts. Private masked banquets became a fad, sexless orgies of decadent consumption. Soon, while on the rare occasions that sex was of interest it might be engaged in on a bus or in a public park, eating was itself an entirely secretive and pornographic act. The great chefs were underground stars of the perverse, the forbidden, the transgressive. Vice squads breaking down doors of speakeasy charcuteries; citizens' militias burning backroom bakeries to the ground; abortionists and sex artists chasing soup nazis through the streets howling with public condemnation and private obsessions. Finally, the grand charade of Prohibition.
