These are amazingly cool, but the the non-sequitor photo backgrounds take something away, rather than add, to the calligraphy. The works on plain backgrounds look much much better.

Wow, those are really, really cool. nudar, I see what you're saying but "Poésie" wouldn't have the same feeling of depth without the location, "Le savoir" is just gorgeous, and "Ame" looks just like what I'd imagine will 'o wisps would look like as they lead me into a catacomb toward my doom.

Lovely, but I think the real story might be the artist himself, the execution, the creation - can you imagine the practice that goes into this? How his movement must be controlled and fluid at the same time, how quick they must be? I wish there were videos somewhere of him doing these.

Poésie = respectfully disagree, I think it would work regardless. Le savoir = agree, but that is not because of anything to do with the picture to the left of screen. Ame = agree, that looks pretty cool in the doorway. I was more referring to shots like Lumiére - Lux (latin), Camea, and Orage de Trélissac. I just think the artistry is more than substantial enough on it's own to covey the dimensional depth and framing you refer to (admittedly, not in all of the cases). Compare shots like "Art" with "L'art de instant"; IMO the former shows the lightwork simply doesnt need the background image of the latter. It does work with some; all, notsomuch.

Is there an explanation of how the light calligraphy works on the website? The only thing I could find is this video: http://kaalam.free.fr/eng/video/videodub.html which just seems to be normal painted calligraphy, and I'm curious how the light calligraphy process works.

I think these exposures are longer than most people imagine. Given the amount of 'drag' in the clouds, I'd say they are minutes rather than seconds. The exif data is probably around somewhere.
