This is a 3 year old article that only means something when in context with the already deleted "Lost count of mah homes" post. I actually have this issue, from before I canceled my AD subscription.

America is the only country that could be in the middle of a horrible economic slump, paralyzing housing crisis, and ill-conceived war and still make an upcoming election into a battle between the guy who eats arugula vs. the guy with lots of houses.

I agree this isn't really news, though I would say that McCain's quote about not knowing how many houses he owns is, because it does betray a certain "out of touch" quality that is too often present in people with power.

They tend to forget that not everyone has assistants running around to do their bidding, that the average family cooks at home and doesn't have meals with lobbyists who pay the bill, etc.

well, what's indeed funny is the difference with another rich political couple who actually had style: this is how it's done. and McCain's Polo wool sweater and stiff jeans? this is how you do that comfy look with style (got to love the V-neck, the chinos and the Chucks -- or are those Jack Purcells?)

You know, when you elect a president, you also elect his wife. And if West Wing has taught me anything, it's that the First Lady spends a lot time handling the decorating of the White House.

Do you want a White House to look like that? I don't. I think the American people deserve a woman with TASTE in the White House.

Everyone who doesn't know who they're voting for at this point in the cycle is an idiot.

Therefore, all elections are decided by idiots.

Well, thin gruel or not, I don't read PoliticalFilter so I'm glad it lasted long enough for me to have a gander at "the Mexican-tiled patio off the master bedroom, a private space complete with a pergola, a spa and a built-in fireplace."

Not only a lovely decorator touch, but truly a pink-brick cornerstone of red-meat Republicanism circa 2008. Say it with me, my neocon brothers: Real Americans don't eat arugula, but they do recline beneath pergolas.

Heiress to huge megacorp, with multiple houses in multiple states
vs

Son of a woman who was on food stamps for a while, who was always very much middle-class until book sales within the past couple of years.

Nobody's going to argue that Obama's working-class, but there is a huge difference here.

I'm voting for the one who hangs out with Paris Hilton. Wait, I might have that wrong. I think I'm voting for the guy who stayed at the Hanoi Hilton. No, that doesn't sound right either. Maybe there's someone named Hilton running in this election? I'm so confused. It's a cycle, all right.

Any clue what's up with the peculiar repetition of the 'signature deadpan' line, then newmoistness? Or why Theroux wrote this?

I mean, usually one grasps fairly smartly what a name writer like Theroux is doing apparently slumming like this - the subject is perfect, say, or it's a splash of stylistic fireworks -but the extended caption writing here is just sort of...feeble?

Probably throwing unneeded fuel on an unwanted fire here, and I'm would like to preface this as NOT being a pro-Obama or anti-McCain statement.

There's a huge difference between The McCain Riches and Obama's Riches, and it's an important difference. Obama is indeed rich, but it's pretty recent, and at this point pretty much based entirely on one thing he did. Writing a book. There's no doubt in my mind that Going forward, no matter what he does, there's quite a few big paydays for the guy. And i think how he deals with that will be interesting. But It also can't be ignored that in the very recent past, Obama as living much closer to the rest of us than either of the McCain's ever have. Despite any attempts to paint him as an "elitist" the truth remains that Obama family has dealt with (and possibly worried about) things like health insurance, student loans, rent and mortgages, day care costs, pumping your own gas, buying groceries, etc. And have done so within an amount of time relevant to, to take a phrase from McCain himself, "The Situation on the ground" If Obama lived in Manhattan, his million dollar mansion would be a one bedroom condo.

Will this make him a better president? I don't know. But if this sort of thing is important to you as a voter, then the truth is a lot more interesting than "they're both rich".

Even if you hate Obama, McCain's whole "Obama's an out of touch Elitist" argument is and has always been a big ol box of BS. Thats a big reason why this is relevant.

I live in a spectacular 950 sf apartment with incredible ground level views of some grass, a church, and Hobby Lobby. My living room features a black glass top desk in the "office" and a comfortable microfiber couch along with a couple funky retro chairs for conversing or watching the enormous 27 inch Panasonic TV/DVD.

Just as newsworthy.

Eh... His son, on the other hand, Louis, made perhaps the best televion of the past 20 years IMO with Weird Weekends.

Everything about it seems to suggest it's not the same author, other than the name. Perhaps he is friend of the McCains and did it as a favor?
