I know imitation is said to be the highest form of flattery, but isn't this just another way to have Al Jolson sing Rip van Winkle? I mean doing Holmes and Watson in black face and having them shuck and jive would have been straight up racist... how is putting some bling on them and having them shuck and jive any different?

There is no adequate available language to express how stupid that comment is.

...Really, three blind mice? Comically rapping about white culture is racist? Weird Al must seem like David Duke to you.

There's kind of two threads with these guys one thats just straight up funny and then the Other hand ,where they are Apeing something, which for me is kinda lame.

Comically rapping about white culture isn't racist. Al Jolson singing Mammy isn't racist. It's the racist imitation that's racist.

Ali G this is not. This is two white guys saying "Hey wouldn't it be funny to have Holmes (Get it? Holmes?) and Watson act like black rappers, wear bling, bust some moves, and say wassup? Just like they was from the 'hood." And then they put the clip up for everyone to laugh at.

I don't see the flattery in it. And the humor seems to be at someone else's expense.

So yeah. Really. I'll stand by my stupid comment.

You will stand alone.

The "hood" isn't blackness in and of itself, tbm. Pretending to be from an improbable sect of society is okay, as it's just a mockery of cultural segregation.

I will point at you and throw a tomato.

Who says they're pretending to be black rappers? Was it in the credits that I didn't bother to watch? I know plenty of white people who talk just like they did - without any air of humor or mockery. Just because you assume they're being racist doesn't make it so.

Weird Al indeed.

Pretty sure this is from a six year old MTV sketch comedy series. Huh. No. No, this has not improved with age at all.

Thanks for inserting a little depth Ambrosia Voyeur. I guess there's a fine line between the mockery of cultural segregation (Ali G) and just making fun. I think this is sort of racist unfunny, but it seems I'm in the minority.

These cats make fun of everything and are super talented. Emmy-nominated writers, Jordan Allen-Dutton and Erik Weiner, both received BFA's from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts at the Experimental Theatre Wing. Shortly after college, Jordan and Erik, along with 4 good friends, created and starred in the smash Off-Broadway hit, The Bomb-itty of Errors, a hip-hop add-rap-tation of Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors.
If you ever get a chance to see Bomb-itty do not pass up the chance, I had the opportunity to see it outdoors under the stars and it was hilarious. The bard would be proud of these guys.

Thank God for the Metafilter joke police, telling me what it is and isn't OK to laugh at. Without them, I'd be completely at a loss and might run the risk of laughing at all the wrong stuff, and not laughing at all the right stuff.

What have we learned so far?

Well, George Carlin is good -- except when he's saying the 'c' word, when he becomes bad.
Al Jolson is good -- except when he's singing the 'm' song, when he becomes bad. His rendition of My Yiddisher Momma is perfectly fine though, because he's actually got a Yiddisher Momma.
Richard Prior is good -- except when he's saying the 'n' word, because it's an unreconstructed, unironic 'n' word that ends in 'er' and not 'az'.
Tupac is good -- but joking about the self-improvement books that this convicted rapist has on his bookshelf is bad. It's all about the pleasure of the texts, not the raping.
Stuff that White People Like is bad, because it's totally wrong to make fun of the cultural preferences of any group.
Xcept Xtians.
And possibly Muslims.
But definitely not Croatian Muslims.
Even if they like to lop off the clitorises of their little children.
Which they don't, thankfully.
Not as far as I know, anyway.

I'm not sure about Bubb Rubb and Lil Sis though. Bubb Rubb and Lil' Sis are a genuine internet phenomenon/meme. They got the Youtube hits, they got the fan sites, they got the remixes. But I'm kinda scared to like them, because I suspect people might be laughing *at* them -- even though it's all about the whoo, whoo!

Can I get a ruling on Bubb Rubb and Lil Sis?

Bubb Rubb and Lil Sis do not have a Yiddisher Momma.

I thought it was hilarious and a far cry from blackface.

Yeah, I vote for funny. Plus, it was well-done, which for my elitist Yankee whiteboy tastes, makes a difference.

Well you're more than allowed to have your opinion, but do you like the Beastie Boys? Would you put them in the same category (and I don't mean talent wise)? Because this is exactly what they started out as. Russel Simmons saw his opportunity to make some money off of white boy mimicry, and was hugely successful.

It almost kind of fell into Sesame Street rhyming, but overall I thought it was well done.

Wait! Before that happens, here's my favorite Bubb Rubb remix video: Star Wars Ep.IV Das Only In Da Mornin'.

Awesome. Better than anything on last seasons SNL. BTW, there's a quicktime version of this file on their video page which is much higher video and audio quality than the youtube version.
