Geocide in fiction The complete destruction of rocky planets, gas giants, stars and frequently entire universes is a concept which dates back hundreds of years and has appeared in every significant medium. Here I aim to list the methods - real, imaginary, whatever - which have been used in fiction to destroy planets.

Everyone sure is hellbent on destroying the world these last couple of days. What brought this on?

Awesome. Particular props for the Martin Gardner reference.

I find myself thinking that it really makes 'Stranger in a Strange Land' sound ridiculous when one states the central plot elements in plain language, completely out of context. But then I think, no, wait - Stranger in a Strange Land was really just a ridiculous book.

nice post!

Here, some psychic Martians use their psychic powers to remove a portion of a planet's core, leaving void and causing it to implode.

They do? I've read SiaSL more times than I should probably admit (but not at all since the age of maybe 23!) and I don't remember this at all. It must happen off screen at some point....oh wait, that's where the asteroid belt comes from? Yeah, that's pretty incidental.

No mention of Battlefield Earth, one of the funniest comedies ever produced? I apologize for the spoiler, but I swear you'll be laughing until your sides hurt when the human "hero," in revenge for the aliens' conquest of Earth, goes to their homeworld and ignites the atmosphere, condemning billions of innocents to a fiery death.
