Adam Kimmel shares a video of a couple of sane and sedate runs down Claremont Avenue in Berkeley, California. (The likely route.)

Hint for all: it's about skateboards.

Awesome video. I know pat rizzo and he is the stuff of local legend for these runs. Here's another clip (YT quality, but in the fog). And yes, that is the route.

If you're ever in berkeley, drive up that way to grizzly peak. On a clear day, the views are unreal!

They must have filmed this while camping 'cause this shit is in-tents

Is that like Adam Carolla and Jimmy Kimmel together in one awesomely funny dude?

When I used to drive, shit like this used to piss me the hell off. It's beautiful up there, but you sure can't look around much if you're behind the wheel lest some damn adrenaline junky shove his broken body up your tailpipe.

I've seen Internet videos where cop cars hit deer crossing the road, and at least one video where a motorcycle hits a deer. I'm still waiting to see a video of a bicycle or skateboard hit a deer.

Driving from Seattle to Missoula a few days ago, I counted 4 dead dear, one animal I think was a dog, and one dead elk. Raccoons too numerous to mention. Can you imagine the force involved in hitting an elk?

Even hitting a raccoon or possum while on a skateboard would be catastrophic.

I used to ride down big hills on skateboards in the 1970's, but I was always carving, and kept my velocity low enough so that I could run off it if need be. It was fun enough for me...

Note to myself: Make sure Dave Faris vets all future posts.

Hint for all : this has been linked on just about every other blog in the universe.

Hint for Dave Faris: Not everyone reads every other blog in the universe. Or even any blogs at all really except maybe for this one - and this is less and less of a blog and more and more of a link-and-comment feed. This is the first time I saw the linked content, your mom makes beeping noises when she backs up and your face scares goats, etc, etc. In short - STFU.

Also, that video is rad. Rad I say. I like saying "rad" about rad things, like this video. Rad.

I've driven and ridden my bike up and down that many times when I was living near there. That was completely nuts! Hopefully those were kevlar suits....

Rad is right! But man, I quit doing stuff like this when I was around 13 and my knees, hands and elbows are STILL covered with lumpy scars! AWESOME!!!421!!

You guys need to broaden your horizons.

I, for instance, read many blogs. Some are about sports. Some, my friends' blogs. Other, about politics. MetaFilter too, of course. This was the first place I've seen this. And it's awesome.

Comments about how a post has been posted elsewhere are useless. Everyone reads different shit on the internet. You are super great for reading lots of blogs. Great.

Sorry, I have a life in meatspace that involves being away from the computer. Sometimes it involves actually doing real things - like skateboarding.

Anyway, my horizons are so broad it's like I'm standing on Jupiter. What's your excuse?

Yikes! But the suit jackets were a classy touch - nothing like a well dressed gent on a skateboard, I always say.

This reminded me of a delightful argument I once eavesdropped on at a bus stop here in San Francisco. Two high school lads with skateboards and monthly transit passes were debating which bus routes were the best "ski lifts" - quality of hill versus frequency of bus service made for a good deal of earnest discussion.

Intense. I want to see how they filmed it.

Intense. I want to see how they filmed it.

They filmed it with a HD handheld while on the skateboards. Watch it again with the volume up, and watch for the camera hand offs. They're taking turns filming each other and passing the camera back and forth between them while doing 40+ MPH on the skateboard.

That's not the part that freaks me out. The part that freaks me out is when they carve past the shoulder line right up against the rocks. "OMG PEBBLES WHAT ARE YOU DOING YOU FUCKING FREAK YOU'RE GOING TO FACEPLANT OFF AN INSTANT-STOP ROCK."

That and the manhole covers and road cracks. Those are some nice fat wheels.
posted by loquacious at 3:24 PM on September 12, 2008

Beautiful. I was on that road a couple days ago, and it smells so good right now. What a lovely thing to do. Too bad roads are so much harder than snow.

That's nuts. Great footage, and really pretty smooth for handheld. I like the blue tuxedos, it give a real weirdo feel.
posted by doctor_negative at 3:35 PM on September 12, 2008

loquacious: I was thinking the same thing about the wheels when he was cruising the sidewalk, then grass and down a curb without a hitch. (Must get big fat wheels!)

I just rode that route on my bike, and bombing it is fun. That said, wtf is up with posting videos that you can't fast forward? I shut it off when they got in the pickup truck and started bullshitting.

I'd say this is one of the rare things that warrants a "rad."

I just wonder what happens when one of those guys who goes on high-speed canyon drives in his BMW meets up with one of these skater guys; if it happened, and the world lost a skater as a result, would you assume the BMW crossed the yellow line, or the skater? And would it even matter to a judge, who (I assume) would fault the skater without hesitation, for doing something so reckless?

off my lawn and all that

Please post the blooper reel.

Here's a few longboard bloopers, when things don't go so smooth.
I think the guys in the video ride for Sector 9. There are guys on longboards with full face helmets and motorcycle crash suits that reach speeds well over 100km per hour. I want to go skating badly.

thats nothing... a couple of miles from their is a REALLY steep hill called Hiller... I knew a guy in 1979 was clocked on radar on his skateboard going 58 mph. Strangely, he also skated off of Halfdome (with parachute) for a promotion. (back before it was highly illegal) I believe the promotion was for an unbreakable skateboard...

I know this is insane and dangerous, but I can't help but feel that I am not as impressed because I have seen the Jean Yves Blondeau video of him going 100km down a Swiss pass in a wheeled body suit.

This is both awesome and idiotic. Hey, they're young, it goes together. It also makes me miss California a lot.

The overall effect reminds me a lot of Rendezvous, except Lelouch didn't have the temptation of being able to record multiple runs and edit them - which made for a stronger film, IMHO.
