I happened to turn this on and thought, have I been missing good stuff on SNL? Then the show began and I was quickly assured that I hadn't. During Phelps' "we can save the monologue by turning it into a sketch with a cameo by the Shat", I saw that repulsive eater Guy Fieri was sitting next to Shatner. I wonder how much Scripps (or maybe Fridays?) paid to get him in that seat. I bet they hit it right off, too. GUY: Hey, Bill, it's a pleasure to finally meet you, I'm a big fan of green skinned... SHATNER: Do I know you? GUY: Shyeah! Guy Fieri, from the food network? SHATNER: Oh, wonderful. I'd love a burrito. GUY: Huh? SHATNER: Make that dos burritos.

I've never been a fan of Tina Fey. Her news with Jimmy Fallon always seemed to fall flat - too many one-liners, all with the same smug delivery, and the same general mug to the camera. I found myself not liking her because of her reaction to the news - there was never any self-deprecation, never any analysis, just interpreting news stories to make her and Mr. Fallon out as the smarter, better people. Seeing Tina Fey portray Sarah Palin works for me, though, because although I don't care for either of them, anyone showing Palin for what she truly is deserves respect. While I doubt it makes any difference to her, Ms. Fey has earned my admiration - she did a great job.

Sara Benincasa has it down, with that mixture of folksiness, loopiness and ego that she concocted in improv. I'm sure, though, that Tina Fey knew she couldn't get out of SNL, at least this week. It was the best sketch of the night, which obviously isn't saying much, and its best bit is the metaref to Palin's 'Tina Fey glasses'. Weird watching it. The accent clearly isn't there (it's bad Newfie to me) but the visual hits the uncanny valley. I also believe (sort of) that choosing Palin was clearly a quid pro quo for Lorne Michaels' $2300 donation to John McCain last year. Cheap, if you consider the number of extra viewers they probably pulled in tonight.

NYT article was interesting. Palin comes off as George Bush III - Loyalty, secrecy, and eliminating enemies are her number one priorities. Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live, the governor and her staff were watching from 30,000 feet. Palin was on board her campaign jet flying from Reno to Denver as 11:30 PM Eastern rolled around. But the show was available on the Jetblue charter’s satellite TV system. Standing alongside SNL cast member Amy Poehler who was impersonating Hillary Clinton, Fey’s Palin extolled her foreign policy expertise in a flat midwestern accent: “I can see Russia from my house!” There were howls of laughter from the sizeable press corps covering Palin’s first foray on the campaign trail without her running man as a chaperone. But, from the front of the plane, silence. The flight attendants assured us Palin and her entourage were watching. What she thought, though, is anybody’s guess. Palin has yet to say so much as hello to the press corps.

It's a feeling I first got from a few of her speeches, but now I'm almost certain that they got her a Hooked on Phonics kit and just have her talking points written out phonetically on big cue cards. Maybe, or maybe he was using "Uncanny Valley" as a metaphor for something that was exactly like uncanny valley with the exception that the object was not generated by computers. Plus, robots are not computer generated, so by your own definition, robots could not fall into the uncanny valley. Lest we forget the Sunday Boston Globe -- Alaska Spending Soared Under Palin. So did their revenues, Palin raised taxes on oil companies, and increased every Alaskan's welfare check by 50%. Wait, taxing oil companies? Handing out welfare checks? Yes it's true, Palin governed as a socialist. Shows the ideological emptiness of the republican ticket, and I don't think there's much indication that she's hew to the same polices in the Whitehouse.

That "stop blogging" story gets better when you realize the woman who was finger-wagged, Sherry Whitstine, is apparently a fundamentalist conservative. She writes as Syrin at her blog. It's full of fun: You have 60 Days to know something about this woamn sarah palin. Why are most of the Christian so called conservative talking heads so easily deceived? I and many others in Wasilla have tried to reveal the true nature of Palin's creditibility. In my case, I'm a conservative Christian, active Republican in the State of Alaska. Sarah has never been an active participent in this party. Hey, I live here and during these 19 month this woman has provided NO leadership. She has left rotten fruit and abuse of power and corruption as her legacy. Sarah isn't going to help get McCain elected or promote drilling in ANWR. Sarah is hasn't reformed anything, she is the most corrupt and unethical governor the State of Alaska has ever had. Sarah Palin is incompetent, vindictive and liberal with socialist tendencies for her 13 years of politics. I hope that's what McCain was looking for. And this builds to a hilariously furious climax: This inept governor Sarah Palin has a high approval from the un educated, sound bite crowd for terrorizing and taxing private industry, growing government. She has continued giving every special interest group just what they want or more. Sarah has created an atmosphere of hate and discontent in the state of Alaska between the people and the legislators. She continues with baseless accusations and directs negative media towards the Alaska House and Senate Members. She just recently tried to oust the Chairman of the Republican Party of Alaska... The fact that she has NO experience and NO credibility was not considered in the debate. We are now reaping the consequences of electing someone quite incompetent to do this job...But really, she has no content no value, no valid experience and no interest but her known. The only "hot" Sarah is, is a "HOT MESS". Sarah is a disaster! She is over her head in life, let alone in a national political position. Check Out the parody songs about Sarah. I can use some PR to save my nation from this fraud. Fascinating.

Okay, maybe not more qualified than McCain, but I, in all seriousness, believe she's better qualified to lead this country than Sarah Palin based solely on the familiarity with world affairs I've seen in episodes of 30 Rock. It's not like Sarah Palin's a very high bar to clear, for God's sake.

I've noticed that all the SNLized politicians are so much more likeable than the real politicians: Amy Poehler as Hillary, Fred Armisen as Obama, that little kid who used to play Dan Quayle (adorable!), and, now Tina Fey as Palin. Since SNL has steadly gone down in quality, the political skits and the news are the only guaranteed good bits. I turn the tv off after the latter.

In 2003, authorities uncovered nine meth labs in the area. Last year, the number increased to 42, said Kyle Young, an investigator with the troopers who works with the Mat-Su narcotics team. Officials with the Office of Children's Services in Wasilla said the problem affects children. The office receives about 40 calls a month from people reporting abuse or neglect involving some aspect of the highly addictive drug. In late February, the Mat-Su narcotics unit arrested a couple at their Willow home. Michelle Motta said for years she tried to warn authorities that her three young nieces lived in the midst of a methamphetamine operation run by their parents, Phillip Dean and Laura Jackson. Alaska State Troopers reported finding a "large active meth lab" in a detached garage shop. The house was a frigid mess, with piles of dirty dishes, clothes everywhere and frozen pipes, investigators said. Through a hatch in the shop floor, the team found an underground room with a meth lab in one corner, as well as old marijuana root balls and lights from a past pot-growing operation. An investigator said the team didn't find the children at home but saw signs of them there. Motta said the girls - ages 14, 8 and 6 - at times slept in the garage with the lab. A year ago, the oldest girl detailed the household's rampant drug problems and squalid living conditions in a handwritten letter to a judge. "My parents grow marijuana and crystal the(y) did the drugs that they bought in front of (my sisters)," the letter begins. "They spent most money on them instead of food or doing laundry. I got left home with nobody there I got left home with drug(g)ies..." Motta now has custody of her three nieces. The Jacksons are jailed at Mat-Su Pre-Trial Facility in Palmer. Children sharing homes with meth labs face the risk of contamination, fire, explosion, neglect and hazardous living conditions. Caseworkers report little children complaining of breathing problems from toxic fumes rising off chemicals such as acetone, ammonia and hydrochloric acid. When authorities surrounded a converted bus housing a meth operation in Big Lake in January, a 13-year-old boy who answered the door bragged that his mom cooked the best meth in the valley, according to the troopers. During a 2003 bust at a house outside Wasilla, officers discovered five children living inside, all younger than 8 years old. The calls about meth to children's services in Wasilla accounts for as many as 40 percent of the agency's total monthly child protection calls. The troopers are aggressively going after meth labs, said Capt. Ed Harrington, the supervisor of the state's drug and alcohol enforcement unit. "It's just not a simple process," Harrington said. "Just because somebody calls in and says 'So and so's cooking meth' doesn't mean we're going to kick the door in the next night."

I swear, they are just like kids who learned a new word and want to drop it in to the conversation as often as possible, but ultimately misunderstood the meaning.
