The antarctic hole in the ozone layer is still shrinking, the arctic ice cap is growing, and of course, the universe was not destroyed. What a calamitous time for doomsayers!

This post was deleted for the following reason: while I appreciate the nudge at Al Gore for good measure the fact remains that this is not a good post for metafilter. -- jessamyn

"...so people might be tempted to call it a recovery, but I don't think that's a good term, we're still on a downwards trend towards ice-free Arctic summers."

Wow, what a shitty post. Congratulations.

Repeat after me:

Weather is not climate.

A year of ice growth in the arctic is not a cooling trend.

Haha, did you even read the arctic ice cap story? It says that this is only the second-worst minimum on record, and that... the 2008 graph now appears to be indicating the beginning of an expansion from the 12 September minimum, as the Arctic autumn sets in.

In other words, it gets cooler in autumn. GREAT POST!!A+++++++++ WOULD RAZZ AGAIN!!

A FUCKING WIKIPEDIA LINK?!?!?!?!?!??!?

Dude, it's true–conservatives are not funny. Al Gore is funnier than the funniest conservative. That includes Dennis Miller, who is not funny and will no longer be conservative once the checks stop coming in.

That Al Gore, always trying to make us panic about the ozone layer!

Wait, that is the same thing as global warming, right? I learned this good from my high school scientology class...

So, from those skimpy links: 1. within the last 2 years the ozone hole was the worst ever. 2. The arctic ice is the second lowest in 30 years of monitoring (although better than last year, which was particularly bad) and 3. some random idiots who freaked out about SCIENCE! were idiots. Somehow that's all Al Gore's fault because he is a treehugging chicken little doomsayer. Do I have that right?

In other news, you and everyone you know will still die someday in the not-too-distant future.

A few years ago, most computer models of climate were projecting dates about 80 years hence. Then, as the melt rate accelerated around the turn of the millennium, the projected date advanced to about 2040.

Now, some climate modellers expect to see nothing but open water within five years.

Did you even RTFA, or did you just see the headline, cream yourself, and wake up covered in the sticky mess that is this shitty, shitty post?

Tell me more about this fable about the sky falling. I had not heard of it before you mockingly linked to it.

Okay. But I'm still holding out for the Hadron collider to destroy the world.

The antarctic hole in the ozone is still shrinking

Because earlier doomsayers were heeded and most of the world banned the use of R-12 refrigerant.

Astonishing really. A man-made gas released in the atmosphere had a measurable and harmful effect on the environment - depleted ozone - and when man stopped releasing that gas into the atmosphere, the ozone stopped being depleted. Wonder if that could, you know, like happen again with some other gasses.

I'm releasing man-made gasses as we speak.

Well I enjoyed your last post (and anyone who appreciates Johann Hari can't be completely off-keel), but...

hmm.

For the sake of clarity, should it not be obvious, this is not a good post. Flagged as such.

Arctic sea ice only at the SECOND lowest level ever recorded! Yay!

This was dumb.

The success of the Montreal Protocol in reducing damage to the ozone layer is a great example of how international cooperation and industrial regulation can be used to address environmental hazards. It should serve as a template for addressing carbon emissions.
