Double, if you count the comment I made in the Palin thread hours ago. HA!

I'm not clear on why you linked to the Snopes debunking of the idea that Gore claimed to have invented the internet, and then followed it up with links to stories about policians lying. According to Snopes, he did no such thing.

Sooo... First link goes a Snopes article that says that Gore never said he invented the internet. Second link goes to a story saying that one of McCain's people said he invented the Blackberry-- not McCain. Proof that neither of them lied about either thing.

I know this post is going to get yanked, but this is just fucking stupid. I mean, did you even read your own links?

Apparently the current strategy of the McCain campaign is for half of them to make outrageous lies and the other half to deny them (while chuckling). It just might work.

Gore invented the Internet. McCain invented the Blackberry.

So we can thank two presidential hopefuls for our current, unprecedented mobile access to porn?

Fantastic.

Is this election over yet? I'm the biggest political junkie there is and I'm sick to death of it.

Xuraldo apparently believes in equivalence. You can't quote a lie a Republican makes unless you also quote a lie claiming a Democrat lied.

This crap pisses me off. Gore never claimed to have "invented the internet" - and even linking to that Snopes debunking page serves, at some level, to perpetuate the myth.

However, Gore did invent the Hitachi Magic Wand Massager.

Silly people, I invented the internet AND the Blackberries (both the phones and the fruit). Wait until you see what I've got planned for next thursday!

My grandfather invented gravy. He was also granted ownership of the bottom of the Potomac River by the King of England.

And rumor has it that it's an orgasm inciting machine! Hanging chads indeed...

Also, apparently part of the new Republican strategy is to ignore Obama and run against Gore. It just might work.

BeerFilter, your grandfather is John McCain?

Gore never claimed to have "invented the internet"

Sorry to nitpick on what's essentially a true point (he didn't claim he invented it), but I think the more important thing to note is that Gore had credible claim to playing a strong role in the Internet's development. At least according to Cerf and Kahn, who should know.

Declan McCullagh's dissembling took what should have been a major and legitimate feather in his cap and turned it into a running joke, and I don't think it's enough to say "Gore never claimed that," it's better to say "Gore's actual claim was legit."

I read the news article and honestly I see how it could be taken out of context but when you look at what they were talking about (legislation related to the regulation of the telecommunication industry) it kind of makes sense. My first impression if I had been there would not have been that he was claiming to have invented the BlackBerry. I dislike McCain as much as the next guy, but this is kind of ridiculous.

That said, whoever comes up with the retorts for the Obama campaign deserves a raise:

“If John McCain hadn’t said that ‘the fundamentals of our economy are strong’ on the day of one of our nation’s worst financial crises, the claim that he invented the BlackBerry would have been the most preposterous thing said all week.”

I invented the use of the word "iffy."

But if you admit that Federal legislation can actually make things that better our lives, aren't you negating the Republican platform of the last 30 years?

Yes strangeone, but your 'invention' was to define "iffy" as a synonym for "cromulent".

"Levin pointed out that McCain actually voted against the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (OBRA ‘93) that “authorized the spectrum auctions that created the competitive wireless market that gave rise to companies like Research in Motion [the creator of Blackberry].”

"And even on the very narrow point at issue, perhaps Holtz-Eakin isn’t aware that McCain was voted against the 1996 Telecommunication Act. I think he was the only Republican to do so. It was some kind of crazy McCain stunt where there was a giant, complicated bill with tons of provisions that was, on the whole, a substantial improvement over the status quo but where the nature of the beast was that everyone had some complaints with the text. So McCain took the opportunity to point out some perceived flaws and cast a cranky “no” vote against a critical piece of bipartisan legislation."

That's what makes it a lie. Unlike Al Gore and the advent of the internet, McCain did not create or even support legislation that made the BlackBerry possible.

Of course, the article linked to about McCain also makes it clear that McCain made no such statement, so it's not a lie either. Some staffer made a stupid remark and McCain disavowed it.

Moving on...

Gore invented the Internet. McCain invented the Blackberry.

I'll just assume that Ron Paul will come along and claim to have invented the laptop.

If George Washington couldn't lie to his own pa when he cut down the cherry tree, I don't see why these two jokers have to lie about inventing the internet & blackberries.

Gore never said it.

Yet another lie that became the "truth" thanks to the conservative bias of the corporate news media.

And people wonder why that twit Sarah Palin is getting such a free ride.
