Hmm... who's this testing, me or my monitor? Interestingly I found it very easy to identify when I had a mistake, like hearing a bum note in a melody, but fixing the mistake was much harder. I got 19 with most of the mistakes in the middle of the green/lavender spectrum which is where I did most of my second guessing. I wonder if that's a good enough score to give me the upper hand next time my wife and I are arguing about paint samples. :)

4. I'm not sure how accurate my test was, as i have a wonky video card with lots of shadowing going on on my monitor. Then again, all the shadows are horizontally across my screen, so maybe i have decent hues after all.

Well I tried it again, taking a bit more care on the lavender-to-pink scale this time, and came up with the same score. Fudged the same 4 blocks on the same scale (lavender to pink). Does this mean I have some sort of color blindness? or only that I shouldn't pair salmon shorts and a coral shirt?

Sorry, I made it through the first line before I decided that it's just WAY too much work - and that when it boils down to it I really don't care what my results are. Historically, I've always done well on these things, which makes no sense as I also have great night vison. At least, it makes no sense to me. But, my eyes get worse and worse at being able to refocus on differing print sizes so unless I want to gurgle at pretty colors all day, I'm in poor shape.

8! It's odd, looking at the post-test chart showing the correct hue order. It's mostly a smooth gradient to my eyes, but a handful of the bars seem to stand out as noticeably "darker" than the regions to either side. And I'm pretty sure it was those that messed me up on the test itself -- I kept shifting them a little to the left or the right, but they never seemed to fit. So what's the deal with that? Is it my screen? My eyes? Or is it totally normal?

0! My elementary school art teacher was right about me! That was fun. I found that it worked best if I didn't overthink it--just did it really fast on instinct. Came out mostly okay with a few small adjustments to make. There were often ones that I thought looked wrong until I switched them with their neighbors and that was REALLY WRONG ACK ACK ACK so I figured they must've been right the first time. And they were. Second one was the hardest for me, too, mrnutty, especially the right side. And ditto Rhaomi on the weird gradient for the results. But my screen definitely sucks, so who knows.

0: "You have perfect color vision!" Which makes sense I guess, since I spend half my day staring at pixels. That also made this (1) painfully easy and (2) annoyingly unfun. I am not proud of this result, since it sort of confirms my chairbound sadness. Also, I feel like I've been reduced to a sorting algorithm. Consolation to poor-scorers: I bet you're using a consumerish LCD display, aren't you, and you'ce never tuned the color matching? That would definitely make this harder, on one of those screens where colors wash into each other. I'd go batty. (Okay, battier.)

4. But I'm terrible at matching paint, out in the real world. I used to administer this test, on little round pucks with paint in the middle, arranged on racks. The subjects had to wear rubber gloves so they wouldn't stain the paint. It's so much easier on the computer--the color swatches are larger and have very slim margins.

I got a score of 0, on a crappy laptop display. What the hell? Now I want an uber-hard version of this, so I have an excuse to use my 21" Trinitron for once. This might explain some people I know ask me to match colors for fabrics, carpet, paint, and the like. I thought I was being humored. And I'm a boy. I thought boys were supposed to suck at this kind of thing. My standard joke is that boys get the 12 color box of crayons, which is why men invariably only use black, white, grey, brown, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and then grudgingly admit to the existence of tan and pink. I'm at a loss to figure out what I should do with this "talent," besides filing it next to the ability to fold my tongue along both axes (not at the same time).

amuse, I was actually thinking about sorting algorithms as I was doing the test - I used some kind of bubble sort variant, mostly, since it was easiest to compare swatches with their neighbors. I experimented in the second row with shoving the obviously misplaced swatches closer to the proper ends and then fine-tuning once it looked almost right, but that was less efficient, and I have no idea what algorithm it'd be. (Information/library science, not comp sci.)

You've just taken a Munsell test, q.v. wiki. Those colours are about a hundred years old and were part of the largest scientific study of human colour perception. It should be just barely possible to score a 0 on the test, if properly administered, as each chip's hue difference is just barely at the edge of human perception. Fwiw, the farther your monitor is out of calibration, and the brighter and more contrasty it is, the easier this test will be. I keep my rig low and tuned for press matching. In other words, unless your screen is calibrated to a D50 white point @ 100cd/m^2, we didn't take the same test. Colour science and theory is one of the reasons I'm a photographer and print maker. I love this stuff all to pieces.

0! As an artist/graphics type person, I'd be bummed if I didn't get them all right. But I'm on a (roughly) gamma-calibrated Trinitron CRT monitor and I know my Pantone Rubine Red from a Pantone 032 by sight, and I can differentiate between individual colors in 24-bit and 32 bit color depths on screen, proof or print. I can also tell if your Pantone swatchbook is faded and past the due date. Holy crap. I posted a score of 75 earlier, which was one of the worst scores here, I think. I had taken that test late at night, after a long and active day. Errors of more than one position all over the spectrum I just took the test again, in the morning, reasonably rested, and got a 4.
