Sometimes with Youtube, there's a specific part of a video you want people to see. Splicd generates a url to send people that clip. For instance: cooking a rat or an interesting part of a lecture. (On load, a small amount of each clip's beginning is played.)

The spliced video's url can be easily manipulated: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9A_31-osm8 http://splicd.com/a9A_31-osm8/330/374 http://splicd.com/[video-code]/[starting-second]/[ending-second] In Google Video, add #[number]m[number]s to the end of a url and jump to that time: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4915875929930836239#7m00s

Let's see; Google Video has been doing this for two years. Google owns YouTube. Some third party is needed to do this for YouTube? If I were Splicd I'd be looking for another business model ASAP.

I can't get the links people have posted to work -- for example, 'In The Air Tonight' started in playing the whole video, and even clicking on "play splice" did nothing. What am I doing wrong?

Oh man, I'm crazy about this Splicd hack. So much fun! And easy. My fave so far, Nick Pitera going climactic on No One. Tried changing the Google vid url, nothing happens. Picked a video at randon, tried to make it play at 0:40 http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8013226944490286986&vt=lf&hl=en#0m40s Any ideas how to do that?

This would be useful if you can easily download the spliced version. Youtube videos are easy to download but a bitch to edit.

Nickyskye, if it's an outside video indexed by google video it doesn't work. It has to be hosted on their servers. Your random example is a metacafe video. I'd also drop the &vt=lf&hl=en from the URL just in case.

Way to spell, Internet. I'm sure spliced.com was already taken. I'm assuming that a trademark of a mispelling of a common word is more widely applicable than if not mispelled. I know I started to see deliberate mispellings of business names and brands before the Internet was big.

It's not quirky misspellings in general that rub me the wrong way; those come with the territory. It's just that in this particular case, without that all-important E, the I shortens and the C goes hard: Spliced becomes Splicked. With either pronunciation, you'd have to spell it out in spoken conversation. Annoying. "I'm sure spliced.com was already taken." That's another thing. If spliced.com is already taken, maybe it's not such a good idea to call your upstart spliced.com, albeit wonkily spelled. "I went to spliced.com like you said, but it's just some weird email thing." "No, no, it's splicked.com." "Nothing there."

Pretty much everything that makes sense is already taken, so you have to come up with some kind of abstract name and brand that. Which will also require spelling.

Interesting, I just put together a similar page: 77Kg (selflink) with hackable URL's for YouTube and Google video but without the time splicing, at least not yet. To publish videos like this on your own domain all you need is a redirect and some javascript this page is a good starting point.
