It's easy to forget how good Snoop really was back then, given the kind of cartoon of himself he's become. Yeah, he was never the sharpest lyricist in the world, but there was a moment back in ... when was Deep Cover? 1992? ... where he truly changed things in hip-hop. His style, his feel, was brand new. Nice to see young, hungry Snoop again; it's been a minute.

Everytime I see Snoop Dogg, I think about his appearance on the Daily Show with Craig Kilborn. Kilborn was doing what he normally does, being kind of an ass, but Snoop Doog could not stop laughing. He laughed when his senior photo was shown to America even, something I wouldn't take too lightly myself, and was a good sport when asked, "What is your favorite dessert: Twinkies, Ding Dongs or Ho-Hos?"

I can't imagine the Good Doctor spinning around in a room of dusty hats and ravens, though it is a good bit o' ivory tinkling. Marisa - that bit of Remember When (John Stewart wasn't hosting The Daily Show and the show wasn't so good at "") reminded me of Snoop no longer smoking weed back in 2002 (stating "I have smoked enough to last 3 lifetimes") but that didn't last long. Thinking of him as alert and sharp-eyed is odd, but not so terribly strange after seeing some of his reality show, not to be confused with his first tv series.

To dismas and cashman, everyone knows Snoop got his nasal style from Richie Rich from the Bay Area. He was just the right person in the right place at the right time. He's done a good job of cultivating his brand since then, though.

Someone please help. I have never understood how anything like this can be considered "good." Aren't they just rhyming words, and saying how badass they are? I can understand when they out a decent beat to it, and there's a bit of music to follow along to. "It's got a good beat, and I can dance to it," and all that. But this? This just sounds to me like a few guys who have a few memorized lines in their heads, trying to rhyme the ends of their sentences and be tough at the same time. And, in my opinion, it has nothing to do with any real "talent." I know someone out there will help me understand this.

it has nothing to do with any real "talent." Choosing which words to use where in order to get the rhythm and sound you want, how to say them, where to put your inflections and pauses, what rhythm to use, how fast/slow to speak at any given point in order to have things end up where you want them to, WHEN you want them to, AND have it all still make sense...when this is done well, by someone who is both talented AND skilled (not the same thing), it's most definitely a true art form. I think that really well-done rap (or hip hop, or whatever the kids are calling it these days) can be much more difficult and much more effective than plain old songwriting a lot of the time. A more accessible example might be In Da Club by 50 Cent, yes it was really popular, yes some people hate him, but his vocal work in that particular track is great, he has this lazy but funky, behind-the-beat style, but he always ends up where he needs to. Also try this, because it's awesome, and I loves me some Chali 2na. That said, please remember that it can be objectively good and involve talent, and still not be to your taste, but you shouldn't confuse "not to my taste" with "bad", unless it's Kenny G.
