How come the first word in the archives I find is "vagina"? (Said by a voice that sounds like it's the first time he's ever said it, by the way.)

Also, what the fuck?!

Instead of having words like "dice" and "pimple" and such, they should focus on words that I have mispronounced my entire life. Like "detritus," apparently.

netbros....And what would be point of this? A liitle editorial is not a bad thing. Did you think it was funny....not funny....what?

The fun here is really in the archives, where you go into a whole month's worth of words and whisk your cursor around. Suddenly you're in the middle of a party, where you're picking up a word here, a word there...

I dunno, I thought it was kind of neat.

No worries, tumbleweedjack; they have included words they have misspelled their whole lives to make up for it. "Disfunction?" Really? You guys had to type only one word and no one had time to proof the copy?

bjgeiger: what Faze just said. Plus, I think there is something more to this than just random words, such as themes by month like they do with the font face and switching voices. When it all clicks, I'll be sure to let you know.

Definitions would be useful and educational. As it stands, it's neither useful nor artsy nor groundbreaking, so... I fail to see the point. Wow, a Web site with embedded audio files and a variety of fonts... awesome.

Love it.

I picked months at random and created rhythms and melodies from the words organized neatly into rows and columns. I watched the colours change as I moused around. If I dragged the mouse slowly, words would repeat and echo as if stuttered by Max Headroom.

I was creating my own private minuet. If I moused down to the three dots at the bottom of each page, then I could punctuate each song with "Home. Archive. Contact". If I moused over fast, then all voices sang together, as though in a vocabulary choir.

Most amusing.

qvantamon: It's strange. I opened up the newspaper this morning expecting a headline of the... ornithological variety...

Stochastic navigation for the blind, a talk-box of dubious utility. Holy hell, this is incredible. How can I be the only person who sees this?!

seawallrunner: I was going to say almost exactly the same thing. It's like the score for a Jackson Mac Low performance piece.

I tried using pimple, dice, and vagina in a sentence and now I am sleeping in garage.

The voice for "opportunity" (8/30/08) sounds a lot like Sarah Palin.
posted by Hypocrite_Lecteur at 9:15 PM on October 14, 2008

I came here to say what Faze said, but also it is fun to visit the September 2008 page and jiggle the cursor back and forth between "barnacle" and "carbuncle". Perhaps with increasing rapidity until climaxing on this button in the other window?
On preview: Yes.

Plumber Jake Trapper had been working for years on a disposal system that would not only transform garbage into small bits capable of going through the pipes, it would transform the world. Son Jimmy watched as his dad climbed beneath the sink, turned the wrench lefty loosie, and POOF! He was gone.

Trapper materialized far from home, in 18th century Spain. Now he goes from house to house, solving plumbing and water problems. Each time hoping this sink will be the one that helps him make the leap home. This week on Time Sink: "Drain, drain, go away".

Weirdly fascinating. I'm also possessed by the notion that there's a pattern or puzzle or message to figure out.

I think "opportunity" is definitely Sarah Palin. Does anyone recognize the voice (also on 8/2008) that says "pillow" "umbrella" and "simple"? It's really familiar.
