We wanted to hold onto them for as long as possible. Not as much as a tribute to the early history of MAD... but because these paintings were covering up quite a few holes in the walls.

Wow. Mad #153. First Mad I ever bought. I think it had the Dirty Harry parody (Dirty Larry, perhaps), and perhaps a parody of Longstreet (Longshot, if I recall correctly). I wonder if they'd accept my bid of 40 cents--cheap!

I remember a lot of these covers. I had every issue from #262 to #300 or so. ALF was on the cover of my first MAD ever. Y'all remember ALF, right?

Very cool. I have a stack of MAD magazines going back to the '60s. My mom used to buy them for me and my older brothers. I'd love to have one of those on my wall, but it's not going to happen...

The Max Headroom was the first *new* one I bought with my own money (and promptly had it taken away by a substitute teacher) but a lot of these old ones were sold for a quarter a piece at this seedy little comic shop a long bike ride away. (they also sold old pornos - to ten-year-olds! - for 50 cents.) 60s and 70s MADs were how I learned about those decades. Probably the best way to learn about them.
