Kittens of the Sea

Fish. They're ugly and they smell. You can't find many calendars with them on, and they lose out to pandas when it comes to zoo adoption. But wait! PETA are going to save fish through canny PR. Say hello to Sea Kittens.

I don't understand the point of this FPP but more importantly I don't understand the point of your PR link. Searching for PETA on the page gets zero results as does searching for sea kittens. I hate PeTA with the heat of a thousand suns but this is a perfect example of GYOB.

You can learn a lot about a culture from its bedtime stories. Find out what keeps the sea kittens up at night.

What's going to keep me up at night is worrying about the poor kids who may be disappointed that an aquarium actually contains fish, and that you can't hug them like kittens.

"You did not kill the sea kitten only to keep alive and to sell for food, he thought. You killed him for pride and because you are a sea kitten hunter. You loved him when he was alive and you loved him after. If you love him, it is not a sin to kill him. Or is it more?"

Wait -- PETA doesn't like the idea of pets. But they want to make fish seem more like pets so that people will stop eating them. But you shouldn't own pets. The logic, she is not there!

WTF, PETA?

Um, the PR link was a link to a blog slagging off PR. A bonus link, if you will. If you want to analyse it, knock yerself out :)

It was pretty staggering to me that someone thought fish needed rebranding. Little Chef, Fray Bentos pies, yes. Fish? No.

What the hell? There's practically NO meat on a kitten and you shouldn't eat carnivores, they're loaded with heavy metals and all other kinds of food-chain pollutants.

Ugly fish, tasty dish:

Hopefully not a "substitute fish" like the Orange Roughy, known as a Slimehead before the menu-writers got to work on it. Having over-fished with the usual methods, people started scraping the deep bottom, creating terrible disruption of the ecosystem. Next time you eat one, consider it might be 150 years old.

When Tony is caught and
fed to a precocious young

the bottom of his class, the
irony is not lost on him.
This is the text opposite a picture of a sad-looking mercury-poisoned boy looking at the skeleton of a fish called Tony. But Tony's head is still intact and Tony is looking back at the boy. And the irony of the precocious boy's brain damage is not lost on Tony the dead fish.

In German there's the term "Dachhase" ("roof-rabbit") as a way of referring to a cat; wikipedia claims it derives from the siege of Vienna in 1683, but I've heard (unverified) stories from WWII also mentioning the eating of cats. I don't have any actual recipes, though...

Speaking of ugly fishes suddenly becoming all popular, do you know what the name was for Chilean Sea Bass a few years ago? Patagonian toothfish. Not so appetizing now, huh?

Look, people started eating more fish because a) it's "healthier" and b) they're less like us and cute furry creatures, so c) we feel more comfortable eating them.

I think fish is delicious; I don't know what kittens taste like but I do know that it's against the custom of most Westerners to eat them. This is not necessarily the case elsewhere; cats are a delicacy, I guess, in China, as is dog meat. In fact, we in the West are pretty lousy at eating furry animals (the possible exceptions being rabbit, which is far more commonly eaten in Europe and maybe the Middle East, and squirrel [apparently only really suitable to make gravy]).

Changing the name of something goes a small way to changing your attitude towards it, but only if the change makes sense. And people seem perfectly comfortable eating something called catfish -- in fact it's one of the more popular fish to eat (and a good environmental choice if you can eat it, as well; it's an incredibly efficient source of animal protein). The fact that it's either served up as fillets (in which case it's hard to see it as a living animal) or presents itself whole as a pretty horrific and monstrous creature makes it hard to identify it as cute or adorable.

Also, and this is the major argument against any kind of "you shouldn't eat xyz": fish happens to be incredibly tasty.

I'm all for reducing the amount of meat and fish you eat. On average I probably eat fish 2-3 times per week and meat maybe 1-2 times a week. This is a personal choice I made to reduce the total amount of resources being used towards meat and fish production (and the ever dwindling fish supply). I think it's probably good for most people to eat less, both for their health and the health of the planet. But I think it's kind of wrong to judge other people's eating habits.

Peta will never win by trying to convince people that eating animals is wrong. But, Peta is basically the animal rights equivalent of the abortion pro-life movement. They (or at least, their core membership) believe animal products consumption is morally/ethically wrong. So in exactly the same way that the pro-life movement opposes all abortions rather than trying to come up with situations that reduce the rate overall, Peta moves for a complete cessation of animal consumption even though a more pragmatic solution long term might be to simply encourage people to eat meat only once or twice a week instead of on a daily basis.

It's probably more effective in the long run to support organizations working to reduce factory farming and improve environmental standards. Don't forget that for a long time, the main source of revenue for wetlands preservation came from duck hunters [omg self-link].
posted by Deathalicious at 11:22 PM on October 22, 2008

When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it's time for a serious image makeover.
Perhaps one day kitten will become a synonym for slaughter, and PETA will have to rebrand again.
